You could do a "progressive loading" thing.

You show a blurry low res photo to start with (stretched to the original files proportions) and then load the high res on top of it.

Yes you can, but I believe the jpeg format used for the image has to support this. Otherwise you can't.

Even then it'll still look better if you have a thread for user interaction and a thread for progressively loading the jpeg. Otherwise each time it loads the improved version it'll freeze the GUI.
