Socoder -> Wednesday Worklogs -> TEN : What Have You Done?

Ten Years!!?

It's been ten years since SoCoder was launched.
If the site's badly coded chaos was anything to go by, naff all has actually changed over the past decade.
But what about you?
Ten years is a long time.

What've you been up to?

I've trimmed down the usual Worklog topic to its barebones, but feel free to waffle on for ages!

What are your biggest accomplishments over the last Decade?

Other than Socoder!??
AGameAWeek has turned out quite nicely.
I've also rediscovered my inner AL, thanks to KORG Gadget.

Did everything turn out as planned?

Sure I'm not the mega-awesome celebrity Dev that I had visions of, but I'm ok being that quiet little nerd that churns out epic little games every week!

AL's recent rebirth has been entirely down to the fact that KORG Gadget does SoundCloud uploading. I never considered my music to be worth uploading to something like that, but folk really seem to enjoy it!

How about your general life, health and wellbeing

Hmm.. Well.. We all know how that turned out!
Over the past month or so, I've been using my iOS Reminders to get me off my arse and do some treadmill-based walking more often. That seems to be helping my overall fitness levels.
But as for balance and movement, those don't appear to be things that will be getting any better, any time soon.
Bah!

What didn't you do that you'd like to have done?

I'd've liked to have completed 2012's nice AGameAWeek schedule of 4 monthly Windows games, and 1 monthly iOS game.
That was going quite well for the first couple of months.
It all went downhill once the hospitalisation happened!!

But otherwise, I guess I'm still pissing about doing much of the same thing, and realistically I never plan ahead, so nothing's really gone amiss!

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

Probably still stuck on the couch.
It'd be nice to get outside a little more, but my health issues make that difficult at the best of times.
But, yeah, I'll still be sat here, making stupid little games, and never really accomplishing much!
That's the way it's been for the past 10 years, and I can't imagine that changing any time soon!!

What are your biggest accomplishments over the last Decade?

Going self employed from a while after Uni thanks to one of my most amazing friends who believed in me.
Finally meeting a lady friend or two.
Getting married.
Becoming a Dad to 2 awesome kids.
Escaping self-employment from all of it's stresses.
Making some popular mobile games and being a release day publisher for a console (even if it was the Game Stick)

Did everything turn out as planned?

There never was much of a plan, apart from, yeah, I wanna be a game designer or web designer / developer.

How about your general life, health and wellbeing

Generally Okay, the spate with Crohns during 2010 - 2012 seems to have passed for the moment, my mental health seems to be much better also since leaving self-employment.

What didn't you do that you'd like to have done?

If I could have made a proper go at game development with my friends fter Uni I'd have loved to, it's been part of my soul since I first typed 10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD" 20 GOTO 10 on my comodore plus 4 way back when. But they've all ventured to other places, which is cool.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

I don't have a clue. I really don't. I'll either still be improving what I'm doing at Refresh Cartridges. Orr attempting to make money from games perhaps. I'd still like to make the games thing a full-time doobrie but can't unless I can guarantee money for the family. It's always going to be odd that one.

I've still be in or around paignton by then, Triston will about to turn...18 omg and Layla will be turning 13 years old.. I'll have enough of a handful with that alone!

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!

What are your biggest accomplishments over the last Decade?

Finishing a bachelor's degree in journalism.
Finishing a couple of novels.

Did everything turn out as planned?

No, media is firing everyone, it's impossible to get a job.

How about your general life, health and wellbeing

I avoided (or didn't manage, depending on how you see it) suicide a few times over.

What didn't you do that you'd like to have done?

Publishing a novel. Working on it.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

Having finished a master and bachelor in Russian, with a few published books under my belt, if I haven't killed myself by then.

What are your biggest accomplishments over the last Decade?

Spend a good amount of time coding. Spend time with b+ and b3d. Then some java followed by MonkeyX.

I learned that if you really want it and try you can use your voice to create pro sound for talk/music (voice acting (monkey see monkey do)) Might come in handy in the future!

Saved some money.

Did everything turn out as planned?

I wish I could've learned/saved more.
(backup more!!)

How about your general life, health and wellbeing

Spend a couple of years sick at home and a year hospitalized. I did started to spend more time on sports but need to sport more frequently. Havent need to see a docter in years now.

What didn't you do that you'd like to have done?

Maybe starting and finishing good art/programs/games and maybe retiring because of that (dreaming here!)

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

I hope to learn more. And maybe find myself in a world with better games and software and art and ai around me. (skyrim 2)

Looking at how Aseprite started/evolved I got the idea that I might want to make my own art software in the next 10 years.

I might have spend a thousand bucks on study books if they make good ones.
