Paid For...

What's the dumbest thing you've ever paid for?

The other day we got a "postage not paid, pay £1.50 for delivery" thing from Royal Mail.
I paid, and it got delivered today..

Probably some bits of Computer Equipment. While I was building the kids PC I mistakenly bought the wrong socket mobo (1156 instead of 1155) and subsequently had to buy a nicer PSU for their Graphics Card. I now have a box full of spare puter parts that I need to use of sell sometime soon.

Although most of the things I buy haven't got Intelligence built-in I guess.

Looking forward to getting into some Raspberry Pi action though!

When I had no Internet I had the tv on a lot. There were those home shopping channels. I bought a toothbrush from that which used the static electricity of the finger to whiten the teeth. You had to put one finger on a metal plate. The brush was worn out after a few months. The brush cost me 50 bucks!

A number of years ago I learned the person who does/did those tv shopping channels is a convicted fraudster.

Oh, and I called a tv game one time. That show had fraud written all over it and I only called once. It cost me 15 bucks with only one call! I stil see people who hosted those games on tv in other programs and I still see them as bad people.

Ahhh, that reminded me of my stag do when I prank called one of those adult tv lines. That was a bad call, although it was fun shouting random stuff down the phone at them, it took a month or so for my number to be removed from their auto-call lists.....

I guess also, making a mistake purchasing £300 worth of 7digital shares in september 2020 was a mistake, they're only worth £150 now. Just gonna hold them over until I can break even / make some profit I guess.

I've purchased sooooo many things that I later regretted. One of them stand out though.

Many years ago I did a pc, GP2X and Canoo remake of a GBA game called Guru Logic Champs -
View on YouTube

It's a fantastic puzzler and my version actually won me a few hundred Euro in a Spanish coding comp. But I digress.

Guru Logic was never released on any other system and only had a limiited run in Japan. I still question why!

Anyway, the game did eventually get a make-over and release on the DS, but.... US only and not available on cart (it was an eShop title, meaning download only).

I decided, in my inifinite wisdom, to to buy a US DS to allow me to finally play the game. I scoured eBay and finally found a brand new US DS for something like £30 + shipping, which was an absolute bargain, nbut understandable as the 3DS had been released and DS was now deadi-sh.

Anyway weeks later my postie handed me a silver card saying that import duty had to be paid. OK, not so bad 20% of £30 was still only £6+ £8.00 P.O handling fee (fucking P.O. extortion fee, more like). Still a bargain DS.

Um nope. The seller had declared the value of the DS as $200, not the actual purchase price. So 20% of $200=$40 <>£35 + £8. More than the total cost of the 3DS AND posting from the US.

I told the Post Office to shove it where the sun don't shine. I wanted the machine, but I was not going to pay that kind of money for old tech for just one game. So I guess they returned it to the seller.

I did eventually buy a US DS (for a bit more than that one, but no import duty etc.), and the game, but it was crap compared to the original.

It doesn't count as "paid" if you get a refund, but I sure as hell made sure I got a refund for what was easily my most disappointing videogame purchases.

Space Channel 5 on the Dreamcast.
Issue 1 : The polygons lagged behind the background by approximately 1 single frame. This wouldn't have been an issue, had the game not been a game chock-full of camera switches, and every single time, it was 1 single frame out of sync.
Every god damn fucking time..
And as a music game, where 99% of the gameplay is about PERFECT TIMING, you'd have thought they could've damn well sorted their own fucking timing out.

Issue 2 : The music throughout the entire game was essentially the exact same tune, remixed over and over. Which, if I were downloading a soundtrack to a movie or something, would be more or less ok.
But as a music game, where 99% of the music has to be melodically interesting and entertaining, the fact that it was essentially one single track for the whole game, was quite frankly out of line.

Issue 3 : It took me about 30 minutes to "complete" the game. That can't be right, surely?! I checked online, hunting for unlockables and different music tracks and..
.. Nope.
That's it.
100%'d in 30 minutes.

I took back Space Channel 5.
I swapped it for Worms Armageddon.
Worms Armageddon, though a port of a game I'd already had on PC for years, by that point, was still infinitely better than God Damn Fucking Space Channel Bloody 5.
