Patreon Gripe

Just subscribed a minimum level of £5 a month to someone on Patreon "to access all their patreon posts"..
But all their actual vlog posts (which make up the majority of their Patreon content) were for the higher £12 a month tier.
And they have over 1,000 patrons.

Fuck off, mate..

I get it. I really do. But even the lowest tier of £5 a month will be raking you in over £5,000 a month.
You don't need more than that.

I unsubscribed, and will take my money elsewhere.

I only ever did Patreon once for one thing and for a month, then downloaded ALL of the videos and promptly canceled my account.

Personally, for my stuff I would not use it. I am not giving Jack Conte a cut of my stuff.

That is what I liked about Bandzoogle as I could do anything easily with that host and they took no cut of anything, just not a good fit for an info-heavy site.

Gumroad, has some kind of thing where you can do memberships and now that I am away from Bandzoogle, I may look into that for handling ordering and memberships. As a customer, I have bought several things from Gumroad and it was a pleasant experience. I do not mind them taking a cut. May do a membership thing on my own, but if I had tiers, it would be fair as I am poor and know what it is like. Higher tiers would be for things like private interaction. Or like, lower tier MP3s. Mid tier videos. High tier private interaction and special content like ebooks, pictures, artwork, etc.

Somehow I guess open to all tiers would be a monthly drawing for a giveaway. But the giveaway would be USA only.

Only thing I do not like about Gumroad is they do not allow Jewelry. I do understand and do not necessarily disagree, but some of us are honest and do not misrepresent what we make or sell. But, I can always put that on Etsy.

I do have one remaining monthly subscribestar subscription $5 and used to have a few more to get some rather special interest stuff.

It's nice money if you can get people interested I guess.

Web / Game Dev, occasionally finishes off coding games also!

No credit card here. I might subscribe to some teaching related creators if I could. But chatgpt might be able to turn itself into any personality as a video or audio stream and be fully controllable in the not so far of future. That might be earlier than me finding content to get a cc for.

I'm a bit of a shithead, as far as my own Patreon goes, if I'm honest.
I currently have 6 patrons, but what the heck am I supposed to post to Patreon that I'm not already posting for free on my site?

I kinda settled upon the "They're only subscribing on Patreon if they already like the stuff that I post" angle, but this past couple of months when I've not even been doing THAT.. .. I dunno. Kinda feels a bit shit, if I'm honest.
I really do need to come up with something special for those who care enough to subscribe.

I only subscribe to one patreon, I don't really care if anything gets posted on there or not. It's a gesture of appreciation for how active and helpful that person has been in the community over the years.

Check out my excellent homepage!

Rychan mentioned the one alternative I had forgotten about, does anybody know any other alternatives to Patreon that are legit?

@Pakz Does Paypal require a credit card, or can it still just be attached to a bank account? Personally, I only give Amazon my credit card info and one music site that I have dealt with them since the 90s and trust them. Otherwise I only pay for a service or something online if I can pay via Paypal. Paypal protects my credit card info and I always get my money back if a company tries to rip me off, like happened recently with cell phone service where I paid for a year in advance and they never applied it to my account.

YouTube are doing a similar thing, nowadays, but I think you need X many subscribers before it'll let you do that, and .. yeah.. :/

There's also Substack which seems to do things like Patreon does. Brent Butt uses that one, (that's how I've heard of it, because nobody else I know uses it!!) and they'll take 10% of earnings.

Youtube also takes 40% from what I have been told, they are one of the most greedy.

At least here, in germany, you can attach paypal to your bank account.
You can, as well, transfer some money to the paypal account and use it, so your bank acc wont be billed.

Yeah, I've not done that.
... Mostly because I wouldn't trust giving Paypal my bank account details!!

I can pay money to my PayPal account from my bank account, but only as regular payments, not through it knowing much more than that.

PayPal doesn't have my bank details and hasn't for many, many years. I simply use my bank card or credit cards with PayPal. Anything fishy, I can go to my bank and get my bank card canceled and reissued with a new number in minutes. The same with my credit cards.

@kuron I dont trust paypal with bank details. The local payment system here has been adopted more on the internet. With Humble Bundle I can already pay with my own bank.
But even Amazon here has no full local payment integration yet. These things take a long time. It has also been broken on steam for years now.

@Pakz What one would do here in that instance is buy a prepaid credit card and put money on it. They are not attached to any bank account, are not regular credit cards and you can only spend what you put on it, They are more of a cash card than a credit card.

@kuron I have been looking at those. Those are a option.

Reread Patreon, Subscribestar and Gumroad. Patreon is being revamped and you have to join a waitlist if you want to use it as a creator.

Subscribe star looks nice, but dang I would like to see some screenshots of how the services offered look. Subscribe star seems to have a lot of questionable content over the years, hate groups, etc.

Gumroad still entices me, it is quirky. Kurons by nature are quirky.

In all seriousness, a waiting list for Patreon that has been around for years is the most dildonic thing Jack Conte has ever done. Really makes the decision of what service to use very easy, as even if you wanted to use Patreon, you can't.

I think it's likely one of the many issues that have arisen from Twitter's downfall. Patreon has a blog-like frontend, and you can make it so people can access it without paying, but they can also subscribe to your feed. (I don't *think* you have to be a paying patreon to subscribe to a feed..)

Given that, I bet a ton of people moved their daily tweets over to Patreon, and their followers... .. followed!!

Kofi has a nice site. But I have not been seeing a lot of (new) use recently by artists.
