Socoder -> Off Topic -> Network Woes

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a network connection appeared...

Can anyone here explain to me how I ended up with an active yet unconnected network in my list and perhaps offer some insight as to how to remove it?

I wouldn't have noticed it, but my usual wifi icon has changed from its usual happy green, to having a yellow/orange bit in it.

|edit| cant spell yellow |edit|

Oooh, fancy!
Not a clue, the wifi settings in Windows scares the bejesus out of me!
Like how you click "connect" and it seems to do nothing for 20 seconds, so you click it again, only to have it connect then disconnect again... Grrrr!!!!!

Plug it in, shut it up!!

Possibly a neighbours wifi?!

I just deleted all of the network settings I could find, reset the laptop, now it says I'm not connected to any network, yet here I am posting on the net o_O

|edit| fixed. Uninstalled all network hardware. The cause may have been something to do with an emulated network connection(virtualbox), or some crazy bluetooth device or perhaps one of my driver files had corrupted. Either way I no longer have an unknown unconnected connection |edit|

The extra network connection will be virtualbox, it creates a virtual-network in Windows to connect your host and guest OSs together (so your guests can go online via the host).

As it is entirely located, and working, on your machine; you are always connected to it. I believe it is implemented as an extra network device, like a wifi card, but entirely done through software.

Your other networks issues, I have no idea.

I'm not sure it would have been virtualbox, i've had it installed for months, this only happened a few days ago.

Either way, VirtualBox can setup a local network on your PC, and has for me.

On yours it looks the same, except the 'connections' is left blank. To check you could open up device manager, and look under 'network adapters'. If VirtualBox has setup a network, then it will be listed as a 'VistualBox Host-Only Network' and will be enabled.

You also get other software that set up local networks; I believe some gaming tunnelling services do this to make the internet look like a LAN.

Ah, ok, it wasn't there from when I uninstalled all my networking hardware... Ran virtualbox again, installed the virtual network thingy and it's back again, however this time it says it's working
Perhaps something corrupted it or something for the connection to disappear.
