Be careful with that Ben. Using reactive metal electrodes in salt water can give off some pretty nasty stuff. Hope you've got that in a well ventilated area

P.S... Whatever you do, never use copper electrodes. I did that once and filled my living room with an un-breathable gas, never doing that in a closed space again !. Stainless Steel is one of the safest options.

Ben, it looks like you forgot to take the seal stickers off. I would peel them off, so that all that gunge can get to the insides.

If you were serious about destroying the drive you should have opened the case.

Get some rubber gloves and open the case. Then re drop the disk into your soup there and its done after you let it sit overnight.

@Steve, I opened the it at the side, hopefully that's enough. Thanks for the advice about the copper - but, yes, I did do it outside!

I'll probably take a hammer to the thing tomorrow.

Since you opened it, that should be it. There are only a few people on the earth that would go after that information.

Governments and other entities have the resources but you succeeded.

This sounds like one of those 'destroy whats indestructible' mindgames. I say the only effective way to loose the data is to bury it. Take the plates out and put it in a well-vegetated spot on your land, let the plant and soil life have its way with its minerals. You could even cut the plates to be sure they rust appropriately. So long as you don't sell the land you shouldn't have any problems.

Haha, mindstorm, I think that's overkill! It's only passwords and e-mails from the 90's. Though I'll keep it in mind
