Solution to Intel processors bug wil cause computers to be up to 30 % slower is rumored.

It is the chip that has a bug. I read about linux being hit also.

Here a article about it. The patch wil be released this month.

Typical that older processors seem to be going to get the maximum 30% punishment. Seizing the opportunity to "encourage" people to upgrade.

Sounds like M$ has been watching Apple...

I wouldn't be surprised if they're in cahoots with CrApple.

This is a security issue, not a "screw everyone's processor speed for money" one.

That's what they say...

Apple denied slowdown was for nefarious reasons too. A "simple" security bug doe not equate to a 30% reduction in speed/power.

I bet AMD are clapping their hands.

For me, if you have a CPU that is affected, then, depending, you should be able to ask for a replacement... 5% slowdown after the patch? Mmmmmm I'd let that go... 30%, defo not, I'd want a new one!

The reports might be overexagurated acording to toms hardware.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-bug-performance-loss-windows,36208.html

Still, every intel processor since the pentium 1 again has a problem. From what I have understood today is the future performance hit is mostly when the cpu is working with the drives swapping data around. Something about the registers needing to be continuously swapped.

There have been patches already on linux and those test windows and there were/are no real reports of dramatic slowdowns.

Intel most likely would have advertised a 40% speed increase vs previous gen. when they fixed the bug on the hardware level.

Btw. In the news also is Via, who are to return with new competitive cpu's.

People's desktops at home, the slowdown isn't going to be noticeable in typical workloads. So that's the good news.

Virtual machine servers hosting websites though? They're the worst case for this and we'll see them get hit bad

My work uses virtual machine servers; they're as slow as a dead snail travelling through frozen treacle. If it gets 30% worse we're in real deep shit.

Whoever commisioned it in the first place was a real dumb fuck. It's never been fit for purpose.

BBC has picked up the story, makes no mention of performance cuts https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-42561169

Look at that graph!!!

https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/forums/news/announcements/132642-epic-services-stability-update

It's servers, databases, virtual machines, etc. that are really taking the hit.

Last night's ITV news was horrifying.
They picked up on "Apple announces bug will hit their phones." and ran with it.
Made little or no mention that this'll be hitting EVERYONE, no matter the device or phone.
I know for a fact that there were Android users watching that, laughing at Apple users, who'll vow never to update their 3-gen old OS..
It was shocking to see it being pointed directly at Apple, and the lack of scare tactics is going to stop people from updating their devices, from what is a frighteningly large bug.

I shouldn’t need to say it here, but if you see the updates appear, don’t ignore them, and do your best to update friends and family's systems, too.
