Jay's Laptop #4

: Download

Sweet lord, I'm ploughing through these things..

OK, let's try this again, this time with a Solid State.
Everyone keeps suggesting that all the hammering back'n'forth of a mechanical drive is what's killing them.
I'm fairly convinced that all the hammering will lead to a SSD dying at a much faster rate, but people are all "No, it's fine! Don't worry. Works for me!"

Of course, they're mostly using hard drives for reading purposes, to load the games and play them well.
I, on the other hand, very rarely use my laptop for "consumption", and am constantly coding, creating music, editing photos and more.. All of that is BOUND to take it's toll on a SSD.

And yet, I've opted to try it, because I'm brutally murdered 3 laptops in the space of 6 years.

(Note : Yes, I could've just bought a hard drive, but the joy of giving old laptops to family members seems to be a plus point in this scenario! I like giving!!)

New laptop : HP 250 G6 Notebook
CPU : i7-7500U 2.70Ghz - 2 Cores, 4 Processors (!?! *shrugs*)
Graphics : Typically crappy onboard stuff, but plenty enough for me.
Display : 15", 1920x1080. Can run FR-025 smoothly at 1920x1080
RAM : 8Gb - Ram is currently fluctuating in price at an alarming rate, and when looking at Laptops on Amazon, there was NO option for 16Gb models! Crikey!!
HardDrive : 256Gb SSD

Price : £529, which I figured was alright with a SSD. But.. Who knows, for sure.

Worst thing, so far..

Yeah, they've been like that for the past few Lappy's.
Next lappy I'm going for a 17 inch, in the hope that the keyboard's got a better layout

Is the RAM easily upgradable in that model then? I think my old 15" i5 lappy had similar specs

There’s no trapdoor. Do laptops even have trapdoors, any more, or am I so old that I still think that’s a normal thing??

256gb ssd?

There is a lot of speed difference with all types of ssd's

I've so far seen the SSD peak at 128Mb/s writing, (or, at least, the top-most of the giant Task Manager list!) which is a MUCH higher value than the Mechanical Drive would get. The Disk %age in Task Man was only showing about 75%, too.

.. It's currently pattering away at 2% Disk usage : 9Mb/s, 3%, whilst SyncToy copies hundreds and thousands of backup files.

*notices*
Oh, yeah, sorry.. Forgot to include the size of the SSD! 256Gb.

Meanwhile : Be sure to use Disk Cleanup..

That's one heck of a log!

Prices for laptops have been dropping. I noticed a msi gtx 1060, i5 7300, 16gb ddr4, 1tb, 128 gb ssd. Priced down 400 euro’s. Now for 999 euro. A month ago they had a similar system with only 8gb for the same price.

I would buy another one if it had 256 gb sdd and a i7.

Though I have 3 gaming laptops on my desk here so it is a little bit crowded.

The screen, for a fucking change, is not as shiny as a bald man's very shiny, bald head.
Instead, it's a nice, flat, anti-glare, matt-like finish.

Tonight, I sat outside and did a bit of coding.
The feint smell of smoke in the air, and this..

.. I came back in again, soon afterwards.

Audio recorded via laptop's internal mic. Sounds like I recorded it in the bathroom, but I assure you it was outdoors, in the garden.

Meanwhile..

Mute button has a light

NumLock does not have a light.

.. Who designs these bloody things?!

Battery's a bit pants. Getting roughly 3 hours out of it, which would probably be ok for most folk, but is crap for a power user like myself.

Where do you use the laptop? I have extension cables and sockets near every place I use mine. If you plug in the performance is better also.

Intel showcased a new screen tech. 1 watt screens that should add 4 hours of life to laptops. But this wil be a number of years before those get available.

Yeah, I’ll be looking into additional plug options, I recon.
