Advent of Creativity 3

Welcome to the third Advent of Creativity

Over the course of Advent (December 1st to 24th, and maybe 25th if you're feeling super-productive) your challenge is to post something new to the forum.
You can be as creative as you feel, posting any or all content that you'd like, as long as it shows an ounce of creativity.

What's Allowed

  • Write a poem.
  • Make a little tune.
  • Create some sprites.
  • Build up a selection of sound effects.
  • Make a silly little tool that creates lovely patterns.
  • Post an imaginative photo of your pet each day.
  • Doodle a picture of a scene from your favourite Xmas movie.

I certainly don't expect anyone to have time to make a game each day, but maybe if you're aiming to release a Xmas game towards the end of the month, you could post a daily update blog, and some of the assets as you go along.

Really, anything goes, as long as there's creativity involved.

    Start

The postings begin on December 1st.
You might want to make frequent use of the [spoiler] tags!

    Winning!

Consider yourself "Winning!" if you can keep up the rate of one creative post a day over the whole event.
Since it's unfair to those of us who have busy and active lives, it's been decided that this won't be a true competition, but it is at least something to keep us active.
I do hope you all join in, even if you don't quite manage to keep up the daily rate.

    Be creative.
    Be happy.
    Be festive!!

In previous Advents of Creativity I've picked a medium (2018: Blender; 2019: ShaderToy) and then generally aimed to make something new in that medium each day, occasionally refining something from a previous day. While fun, the biggest difficulty was definitely trying to come up with new ideas of things to make, especially towards the end as I'd used up the good ideas! Plus, I have limited time in the evenings which is tricky when making stuff from scratch - especially as I sometimes get overambitious.

So, this year, I've decided to do some Blender modelling again, but this time I'm aiming to build up a single large scene over the course of the challenge. That way I can just spend an hour or two adding to it each evening, making progress on what's already there, without needing to come up with new ideas or spending ages trying to get that evening's idea finished.

It's not really intended to be a festive scene, this one, but the plan is to build our a future-ish looking cityscape of sorts. Something I can add a building to each day, more or less.

...Naturally, I've already messed up by spending much longer on this first building than I intended! I blame Blender having had a complete UI overhaul since the last time I used it...

This first building is just some geometry for now - not bothering too much about materials / textures at this point, for scope.

Hopefully I can keep more to time tomorrow!

    Edit:coffee consumed.

I have made the sprites on the ipad with pixel studio. These based on the chaos engine tileset.

    Awesome creativity, everybody!!

Not feeling very creative, myself, but at least attempted something. A happy little choon with bells in.

    Ooh, nice stuff.

Day 2: a repeatable big path/walkway segment and a simple archway.

This time another tileset based on a Zelda screenshot. I kind of rushed it though.

I'm not sure if I can do every day now since I am on no1 in the queue for a home right now. We are going to look today. If It is a allright home and I stay on this spot of the list I would have to spend quite some time fixing up my old home and doing the moving preparations.

I'm failing, already... Day Two!? Fuxake..

I started a webby project this morning. A generator, a bit like the Knitting one from last year.
"Yeah, I could get that done in a day...", I incorrectly assumed.

    But.. No.
No, I couldn't get that done in a day..
    I didn't plan ahead.
And I have a newsletter to write.

    This hasn't gone well.

Time to unveil what I've been working on since yesterday..

    Testcard Generator!

It's only about halfway done, right now. There are all kinds of buttons and fixings to be added to the thing, but the basic layout is now working, and should hopefully scale to whatever resolution you give it.

Enhancements to come : Button to save image. Button to add Avatar/otherwise to middle. Button to add text to bottom. Buttons for various default resolutions, as well as editable values.

Today's update to the Testcard Generator includes a couple of important features.
    1. It can now open up an image, to use in the middle of the testcard.
    2. It has options for the resolution.

Annoyingly, it seems to retina-ise page on my MacMini, so the Window/Screen options aren't quite right. On iOS, it's even worse, with Screen being stuck in Portrait mode. Grrrr. Must look into those numbers.

But the numerical resolution values are tweakable, should you wish to specify a resolution of your own.

It currently has a limit of 8192x8192 pixels, but it gets awfully slow if you hit anything like that resolution!!

This has been a pretty hectic week and my schedule's gone slightly wonky this last day, but here, still technically just in time for Day 4, is a new tower! Learnt how to make effective use of the boolean modifier to cut out the hole through the middle and give it the nice bevel-y bits.

More work on the Testcard Generator.

    Today's tweaks..
    1. You can add a title to your Testcard!
    and
    2. You can toggle between my fake testcard, and a "more" truer Testcard F.
(although due to complex maths and the annoying anti-aliasing that Javascript does, it's not 100% true Testcard F)

My fake testcard and Testcard F aren't THAT much different, but the big cross in the middle and the four corner circles aren't on Testcard F, so this toggle switches between the two styles.
I think tomorrow might be an attempt to make a different style of testcard! (Ooooh, excite!!)

Day 5: some kind of park thing with a fountain thrown together very quickly in half an hour because apparently even on a Saturday I'm busy! *rushes off again*

    Today's additions. Testcards A and B.
They're both incredibly similar, but that at least saves me a little extra work!

I did try making the loaded image be B&W, but it proved to be fairly tricky using Javascript+Canvas..
.. Well, not "tricky", just not working!!!
The code should work on some browsers, but quite what those browsers are, I've no idea.
I think I might have to do the good old "make a greyscale duplicate of the image in code" technique to get it working.

    Ho-hum..

Since yesterday's entry was very rushed, I decided to clean it up for Day 6. Now somewhat more park-with-fountain-y, and with connection points for paths to reach it. The path connection points got me a bit more practice with the boolean modifier, but the main thing I've learnt this time is how to do proper overall smoothing by beveling the edges, rather than having sharp edges (as those get a bit tricky with more complex models).

Seems much less nobbly, now! But I like the "hedges" style park.

    Another day off for me.
I attempted to get a game off the ground, today, but was thwarted in a myriad of ways.
Still, half a game is done, so.. there's that, at least.
    *tsk*

Yeah, I liked the idea of having lots of small hedges but couldn't find a way to make it look nice, so decided to try having some fewer larger hedgy things instead. Possibly I'll be able to spruce it up a bit if/when I do a texturing pass.

For Day 7 I've created what's intended to be an elevator tower to cover the vertical distance between the paths, since at the scales these are meant to be at it would look silly to add stairs! Though I've only modelled the exterior. Like the paths, the elevator is modular, so I can assemble it however I want later on once I start to figure out the actual layout of this cityscape.

Testcard C took bloomin' ages to get right, but I eventually got there.

The engine can now do A, B, C and F!

    Those are looking really cool!

Not a lot of time myself at the moment, so for Day 8 here's a really quick and simple tower. The intent for this one is to be an easily duplicated piece of backdrop, hence its simplicity - though if I get round to texturing things then maybe it will look a little less simplistic later.
