It looks very nice when people first boot it up, but then they customize it with garish colours, ugly low-quality backgrounds and themes that just clash. It's like a MySpace OS.

It's quite possible to choose garish colors, ugly backgrounds, and clashing themes with Windows too.

Yeah, but typically, kids can't actually find the windows color scheme options, and usually just end up changing the desktop via IE's "Set as Desktop" option.

Very true... but kids who can't find the Windows color scheme probably don't use Linux anyway.

I've seen far worse customized desktops on Linux then on Windows.

Linux too customisable?
What's wrong with that?

All right, some people might choose an ugly GUI theme - but it's not like they're forcing you to use it!

And if you're on your own Linux desktop, it can look as pretty as you want.

Many of the customized desktops I've seen are a crime against taste and humanity.

Oh, right, my desktop's desktop (image of notebook's desktop is still up to date).

As you can see, this computer has a much more decorated desktop than the other. Like, there's actually wallpaper.

Hey Diablo,

At first I thought you were being silly - but then I saw what my sister had done to her desktop, and now I must admit, I agree. It is possible to commit crimes against taste using the GNOME desktop

But, it's also possible to make beautiful desktops too

True, and I agree. It's just unfortinate that most of the people who show off how much you can customize stuff in Linux usually make terrible desktops. Like they are customizing just for the hell of customizing.

And this is where the magic happens...

It might be hard to tell, but I built that desk out of one of my brothers old art boards and some wood I found in the garden. It might looks a little small but it goes back a little further then most desks which is ace. It means I can put books and stuff between me and the keyboard. The fan also keeps me cool during these hot mornings.

@DiabloDevil, lol I love the dented bucket chair!
Had a few myself a while ago ) Found a great alternative though - fishing stool! (will upload pic later) and for table/desk, I got one of those wooden food trays.
Not as economical as yours but I couldn't see myself sitting that low for extended periods of time.

I've recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop. Having a really tough time trying to customize it though.

Oh... if I was supposed to have posted a picture of my physical desk, I can't... mainly because I can't actually find it. It really throws my waza out of balance, since apart from my desk, I'm almost a neat freak. :|

@ Diablo...

Yeah... Good idea to use an upside-down box for a chair, the eggheads of the world are always telling us to recycle. I've used one of those old 1970's Space-Hopper toys as a computer chair in the past.

Just cleaned my desktop! I'm loving it. Also made a few personal touches, such as nameless icons, a fake Porn folder to catch the snoops in my house, and a customized "Start" button!

Ok, I've decided what I'm gonna do... I'm going to create a small program in Blitzbasic called "Porn", and give it a folder icon. The program will record the number of times it has been run, and make a funny little message appear too. It'll be great!
