Insects spritesheet

The last week I had not drawn anything. Only monday I did a insect sprite on the android phone and another one later. Though I wanted to do more in aseprite.

Tonight I looked up several references of topdown pixelart insects and opened up aseprite. With google images and chrome you can copy a image into the clipboard and paste it into any editor. I started doing this and switch between editors to study the reference while drawing my own version.

The book I bought is useful. Though I wish there was more on lighting and shapes in there.

I made 10 sprites and I think it took around 2 hours to get them done. I am not sure on the outlining and how the technique I used is called. Either selective outlining or colored outlining. I am pleased with how they turned out however.
Instead of lighting from the center and keeping the left and right the same I now colored and shaded a little different.

I might make more insects or maybe look For something else.

Steam says I have almost used aseprite 12 hours the last 2 weeks

Cool!

A nice variety, and a couple of particularly creepy looking buggers, too! Eeek!!

One slight issue you might have, and something to think about going forward, is that you've added lighting in a particular direction.
Although in the majority of cases this is perfectly fine, for top-down insects it becomes more of a challenge.
Basically, I'd imagine those scuttering about the screen, and needing sprite rotation to keep things moving.
If you rotate them as they are, the lighting will then be wrong.

That'll be why the tutorial suggested you keep things centered.

Whenever I'm drawing such things, I try to make the light be absolutely top-down, and centered, so that when they're rotated around the light still makes sense.

Yeah, now I think of it that is something to keep in mind. I could mod these sprites later on though, but this takes time.

Absolutely. Once you've added all the nice shading, it can be hard to go back and change the style you've used, especially if you've animated the thing, too.

This was something I had to tackle when I did Alien Deathmatch's aliens for the first time, and then had to go back and redraw the whole bloomin' lot of them...
.. Grrr!!!

I hope to get better at it. I am beginning to understand how this shiny effect that I am after is needed to be done. My wish is to be able to get as good as the artists of the bitmap brothers from eons ago. Wil take thousands of hours of practise though.

I had not noticed the challenges on pixeljoint yet. Though results of google images for pixelart insects was quite good.

When I am on the laptop I wil look at the other link as it seems to need a keyboard.
