That looks really cool.
Thanks Hobo.

Check out Gensurf and also Terragen.
If you don't already know.

Thanks, I'll give those a try Terragen sounds familiar but I don't remember using it.

If you want to create a quick terrain heightmap in Gimp you can go to Filters > Render > Clouds > Solid Noise and tweak the options to get some nice terrain. Just make sure your image is of size 2^n (e.g. 512, 1024)

It's nice to see some improvements to the UI. The GIMP has always been notouriously bad with that. I'd also still say that feature wise it's probably the best open source art pacakge. But it's still not in the same league as Photoshop.

Another free alternative which I prefer to use on Windows (I find it's faster, has a FAR better UI and I'd rather have to install .NET then QT) is Paint.NET.

Thank HoboBen.

When I do get around to generate or modify
terrain height maps and for 3D Game Studio I will use this tool and the MDL editor too.
But again I do like this CityEngine. Saw it while reading a 3d graphics magazine.

and Paint.NET
yeah JL, got that as a free tool
on this 3D GameStudio book that I bought.

I can't seem to get into all these complex image-editing programs. I usually build images in MS Paint all the time - I mean, it's easy to use! Gimp, to me, is way overly complicated, to the point that I can't get anything done.

For Mac users there's also Seashore - a simplified GIMP clone that uses the native Cocoa instead of X windows.
