I just discovered this thing and the water looks great.

The people who sell this should put the link for the price before the entry form.

How much is this thing?

I won a copy of this a while back in a coding comp, but have never used it (I'm not a big FPS fan and I understand that the games are HUUUUUUGE).

It's on eBay for £17.50 - eBay link

I'll sell it for £15.00 inc P&P (UK). BTW my one has this cover -

Bleh.
Don't use this!
Never trust other people's code unless it comes in a code form (which I'm guessing this isn't, as then it would have been sold as 'FPS API' or 'FPS SDK') that you can actually learn to understand and tweak at your option if it doesn't work the way it's supposed to.
Besides, I'm willing to bet about 100 bucks the network code in this piece of crap can't handle more than about 100 people or so online MAX (unless they're using UDP, in which case they probably haven't accounted for clumping).
So, in other words, you probably can't make an MMOFPS with it.

Afr0s right. This is better for people who have never done any coding but would like to get a very easy introduction to game making. Or for people who just are to lazy to learn how to program. Its just point and click to set up your game, so imagine how limited it is is. If you already know how to program, then you would probably be better off without it.

I'd agree that you could probably code better without it, but from a pragmatic point of view it would be useful to at least try tools like these. It'll give you ideas and tips on how you might be able to build a FPS yourself, if you'd prefer. Plus I'd expect you could at least prototype some ideas easier and quicker in that then in code.

If the license allows you to use their artwork, it might also be worth it just to nick that.

|edit| "Yes! If you download the FPS Creator Game Engine source code and recompile it, you are still permitted to sell your work free of any license." <- dunno if that costs extra, and the rest of their license is fairly liberal (models come in .X format, but you can edit them freely) |edit|

|edit| edit2: |edit| Wow, their model packs are not bad either - and they even have a bit of a physics engine: video. good stuff this - And just £11 for the model pack! As soon as Cobra3d gets .X support, I am sold on that area!

Yeah, it's a nice looking product.
If it is, as it says, a fully working and decent FPS engine, then what's the harm in using it to make.. a fully working and decent FPS game, but with your graphics added on.

Seems reasonable to me.

There's a reason so many games use the Quake and Unreal engines.

Devmaster is pretty much the best place to read user reviews for virtually any engine. I highly recommend you read them for FPS Creator before buying because these reflect alot of what I've seen on other sites. Then, compare the feature list and ratings to other engines like Irrlicht and Ogre3d. Hopefully you'll see why I am against it for anything other than an introduction into game making (even then it doesn't portray it very well, what with no programming involved).

well, my take on all of this:

um at least this FPS Creator thing is a couple of nothes above and better than their Crapmaker...er I mean their Game Maker.
I'm embarrased I bought this.
Oh well, live and learn.

Second thing has to do with their graphics and models.
I do like some of the 3d models in Dark Basic and DBPRO and have used them in other languages such as Blitz 3d.
Yet, the models are really good in the DarkMatter 1 and Dark Matter 2. You can use them in DBPRO and I think in C/C++ languages. Yet, their 3d model formats are propietary. I tried to use them in other languages and only the first frame is displayed and rendered.
So, I'm thinking perhaps that these models in the FPS Creator can only be used in their lanaguage products and also in C/C++.
Some of them didn't display nor animate correctly even in DBPRO. yet, I remember using the Geisha Girl and the only frame that appeared was her spreading her arms out. So, I had her spin around and also had her flipping in and out and also with a mirror image on the bottom and both of the Geishas would merge again. ahhhhh!! cool!! I did this in Blitz 3d.

What do you mean when you say "I mean..."? It IS called CrapMaker, isn't it?

It is possible to make both good and bad games in every language - even GameMaker. I've seen some fantastic stuff made with it (yes, I've seen crap too), but that's not down to the program, but the user. I can say the same about C, Blitz, PlayBasic, PureBusic, GlBasic, JAVA etc. etc. etc.

If you put time and effort into what you are doing, the results will speak for themselves. Sometimes you can't polish a turd, but you might have a diamond in the rough.

Criticising a program that you don't know or use is pointless. Each and every language has strengths and weaknesses. It's all about making the best out of what you've got.

Rarely does anyone deliberately set out to make a crap game, but sometimes things just don't turn out as expected. Besides what may be crap to one person isn't to another - the term is highlu subjective. To me all MMORPGs are crap, as are flight sims - no matter what their quality.

haha

ladies and gentlemen, here is another perfect example of being misunderstood...and also not being asked to clarify what I say.
And also, I do admit I erred on the name its not Game Maker but the 3D Game Maker. That is what I meant. So my apologies on calling one turd for another.

The true and original Crap Maker:

and hey, true its pointless to criticise a langauge you do not know or use. As well as its pointless to share and lecture someone on this merit without asking them if they have ever used it or know about it.
Have you asked me?? You could've asked me without the defensive and philsophical lecture. Well, anyway a few years ago I used both the 3d Game Maker and especially the Game Maker. Learning and using it for a long time.
My assessment is a short word of crap. I don't like the inteface, the clickty and drag n drop creation
of scripts, nor the over-all visual icons. My time is better spent on other languages.

Thank you and cheers

That's where you fell into my trap PowerMousey - I was responding to the 10 year old below your post!

I wasn't being defensive about GameMaker - it's something I personally wouldn't touch. I was merely highlighting the fact that crap games gcan be made in any language.

its cool and okay.
but its not a trap to me. I don't consider it a trap.
Just my assessment and from personal expereince of learning and using these products.

By the way, his name is Yo. And despite his age, he knows some stuff about web programming and other tricks of the trade. I learn some things from him too.
I'm never to old to learn from you,him and others too. I learn and relearn things all the time.

And sometimes, I'll admit and even confess that I get envious sometimes from some of ya and the code and programs you write.
Sometimes, feel like a Steve Ballmer in a group of Bill Gates, Steve Wozinaks', John Carmacks, John Romeros' and Andre LaMothes'. And oh yeah, Wil Wright of Sims and eventual Spore fame too.

Now they're all crap

BTW I don't think there's a day goes by where I don't learn something from someone on the web, no matter what their age.

um Dark Basic...the Mother Harlot of Basics
got me going again on game programming languages.

Right now and currently, I'm into BlitzMax and especially the OOP programming. I'm also eagerly awaiting for Nuclear Basic and a few others in the wings.
Yet, the 3D bug is biting me again. I'm yearning and have the urge to get back into 3D graphics and doing logos, and scenes with 3d models.
More than doing anything else in coding and programming.
I'm getting inspired and moved to the 3d models and scenes listening to Petra and Van Halen. Truly, Sammy Hagar is a Phantasy Star.

@rockford,
I don't know about that. Certainly not John Carmack, Steve Wozinak, and Andre Lamothe. And John Romero is cool. Yet, I suppose they had their glory days and seized their moments. Now, its time for new Coding Champions and Proggramming Paladins to pave the way further and leave their mark in time and history of the machina matrix.
Serious and True.

It was a joke PowerMousey. Did you not see the smilies?

BTW What's Nuclear Basic? Have you a link?

I too have been using BMax and love it. I bought into Cobra, but stopped developing in it very quickly when it proved that it's not that great in 2D - it's significantly worse than BMax, that's for sure and not that much better than PlayBasic.

Well, FPS is not what I'm trying.

I've decided to use the Ogre graphic engine, one I find instructions on how to set it up.

I do like to joke and laugh a lot.
And I understand you where joking.
But when it comes to

Carmack and Romero

The Woz...Wozinak and also Steve Jobs

and even Andre LaMothe

I don't joke about. These are some of the Geek gods of the Matrix. They are immortal in spirit and of Digital Destinies.

ahhhhhhhhhh!!, I'm serious but in a joking way.

here is a link about Nuclear Basic:

and @dna,

good luck with the Ogre.

Sorry to bring up a dead post (it's only been 17 days, I say this post is still warm!)

But on the subject, there's a chance to win a copy if anyone feels psychic. Though that's the DX10 version, so I guess you'd need Vista!
