Socoder -> PC Gaming -> Head-bobbing

What's your opinion of the head-bobbing / camera swaying effect when you walk in FPS games?

Personally, I can't stand it and after a while it either makes me feel sick or I just find it annoying. But some people seem to think it really makes the game immersive. Would you add a similar effect to your own games?

I just got S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl for £3.49 (special offer) on Steam, and I just think the head-bobbing is excessive... All in all, that game is worth buying as a perfect example of everything that DOESN'T work in a FPS. I really don't know why it got such good reviews.

Minimal head-bobbing works ok, but you're right, folk seem to have overdone it plenty in the past!
Would I use it?! Probably, but only a tiny bit.. If you do without it, your game looks like a bizarre floating machine, rather than a person's head.

I thought Stalker was buggy and overratted but still a very good game. I thoroughly enjoyed it dispite being forced to go through the entire game twice. If you go to the last area without doing certain things first (like I did) you can't get the full ending.

For head banging, I think it can work as long as it's subtle. I also think it should be something intelligent where it moves differently depending on how you move. More then just:

When people run in real life their heads don't headbang in exactly the same as when they walk, but faster. Headbanging in games should be the same.

Most of the time though I don't notice headbanging, which is probably why I like it. It's one of those touches where you shouldn't notice it. If your attention is drawn to it then it's clearly too much and fails.

I think that headbobbing is good as it's more realistic, but, as JL said, it should be subtle. If it goes OTT, then it's just silly, but when used properly it's a good effect. For instance, in Half Life 2, when you're still there is no bobbing, when you walk there's a tiny bit, and when you sprint it's slightly more noticeable.

Having absolutely no bobbing is bad, because it looks like a camera just wooshing around, instead of feeling like a person.

Realistic head bobbing sucks; motion used in STALKER and a few other FPS's going for that realistic feeling. I do however, find that a small about of up-down motion helps get rid of the feeling that you're floating.

So, small about good.

Just launched HL2: Episode 2 again - there's no head-bobbing that I could see at all. Instead, the weapon that you're holding bobs.

That's best of both worlds, isn't it? Realistic, and not going to make anyone sea-sick!

Maybe, but HL2 had a lot of sea-sick reports when it came out!!
(although that was more than likely the camera settings!)

Unreal has head and weapon bobbing, and it's not too annoying.. albeit the movement in the original is a little floaty, but ah well
