I can't remember how many times this topic has been remade, but it was started oh-so-long ago, by me, on Codersworkshop, and I think we've finally gotten down to the final installment of the thread! Engadget reports: The Optimus Keyboard will be available for pre-order in April and will ship near the end of the year. The price tag has been raised from "the cost of a cell phone", to $1200, and finally to $1490! More, less programmable, keyboards will be sold later that cost much less. The OLED, 32x32 pixel keys have a life expectancy of only five years and cost $10 to replace. After years of hype this keyboard has ended it's story with a gigantic let-down... -=-=- My Twitter

lordey!!  my longer than 5 year old keyboard still functions fine for me. Sometimes the <cr> key gets stuck once or twice. And also some of the key have dirt and food stains on them. And a stain of some soda too.  cheers, power mousey |

that keyboard is so awsome, but its so expensive! i remember people saying it would cost $200 dollars back on CW, wich at the time i thought was alot for a keyboard, but WOW!

On the keyboard in my loungeroom, engine oil from cars is commonly found between keys. Yick. I have a $20 keyboard from Logitech that I've been using for years. Even with the engine oil, it's never stopped working (thinking about it, the oil probably lubricates it :S ).

yeah!, yak its Lubing time. oil that keyboard. also try some WD-40 too. true, steve. and when you get your PHd. come over here and wheel in your electron microscopy and analzye what kinda stuff is lurking and even multiplying inside my keyboard too. new strain of kinetic keya stosis?...or something. cheers

I know someone who had so much crud jamming his keyboard, he immersed it in a bath of warm water and hung it out to dry for a few days. Supprisingly, it actually worked.

@steve, hahaa and you know, today is laundry day.face up to the dreaded dirty clothes. might as well throw my keyboard in. Never know? I got a few others that I can use. @jay, maybe not, jay. But it will get a very good wash and dry. cheers, power wash mousey and wet behind the ears too.

Sun Microsystems are working on them Mousey. Also keyboards are water proof, and you are able to put them in the bath or even the dishwasher, but you must remove it before the dishwasher goes onto the drying mode (melts the plastic). The other day I washed my keyboard, but water seeped in between the sheets of electronics (probably because of when I opened it up and took them out because it was mysteriously full of grease and was sticking the keys down). When I pressed 'u' for example, it would type 'ueio' and 't' would be pressing F3. Another keyboard I opened in the bath was full of tobacco from all the times people rolled cigarettes at the PC. Both keyboards (and many others I've washed) are perfectly fine once dry. As a consumer I would expect to be able to submerge and wash the Optimus Maximus keyboard. |

I dont have to worry about tobacco in my keyboard coz I gave up smoking seven years ago. M Dad is scared stiff of computers, so his tobacco does'nt end up in the keyboard. The only thing he does on the PC is use the R/C Flight Simulator, the R/C controler needs two hands to opperate, so his hands are to busy to smoke.

Although you can clean your keyboard, I would advise people to remove the top and clean that separately. Over the last week I've had lots of trouble with my keyboard since I washed it. First multiple keys were being pressed such as 'we' and '23' instead of 'e' and '3'. This was because of a crossed connection. I cleaned the electronic sheets directly with water and it fixed it, however all the keys along the middle-row from 'a' to ';' stopped working, as did the bottom of the numberpad, shift, and certain others. These keys are all on the same circuit line for the keyboard, so it was a loose connection. After washing the circuitry more thoroughly in the sink and drying them more thoroughly (I think limescale was the problem) it is now working. Well except for the big '0' key on the numpad, which is playing up more then usual since I fixed the circuitry. In short, don't wash. It's too much effort. |

It is supposed to be waterproof, and I had to clean my electronics further (namely the connections) to get it working again.

Wow, i need to see if i can clean my keyboard, its beginning to look like that too. I just don't think I can take the keys off. I think ill try a vacuum cleaner... And i really wish i could get the optimus maxiumus, it looks amazing... -=-=- ''It works, but I'm not sure why it works...'' |
