Same here, this really does define the saying: "the motor is running, but there's noone at the wheel!"

"From now on, our cars will more deeply understand that buses (and other large vehicles) are less likely to yield to us than other types of vehicles, and we hope to handle situations like this more gracefully in the future."

To be fair, there was an actual person sitting behind the wheel who decided to let the car pull out into traffic.
the accident was just as much down to human error than any other traffic accident.

I would rather sit in an RS Turbo, in the middle of London, with a 10 year old at the wheel than trust a Google car.

Accidents are bound to happen, whether human or CPU based. They're just lucky that, so far, nobody's been injured.

AS Spinal said the human passenger was also at fault, but to add that he also expected the bus to slow, so an accident would have occurred if it had been him driving and not the car.

I expect accidents to occur - it's still very much experimental with a huge majority of nutters on the road. Even a computer can't predict human nature 100% of the time with 100% accuracy.

The cars have already clocked up millions of miles, meaning many thousands of hours of driving without ANY at-fault issues. That's better than pretty much EVERY human driver.

Nor, what happened was the cars OS was using Vista and Google decided to drop support of it mid drive!

I don't entirely agree.

These are supposed to be DRIVERLESS cars. They should be able to operate safely even if they are completely empty, which, clearly they can't. It's all very well saying "we thought the bus would let us in" - since when did bus drivers do "considerate"?

The car should have catered for the unashamed stupidity of bus drivers, and it just didn't. Hence, crash.

I would rather all the cars were controlled by a machine than the mindless idiots which are driving around now!

THIS

The google cars have clocked up millions of miles over thousands of hours with only ONE accident caused by them. I'm pretty sure that that is much better than the majority of people could caim.

People on the roads are idiots. And I bet the Google cars even know what an indicator is - 99% of people don't seem to.

I remember a while ago they were testing some sort of augmented cars with sensors that wouldn't allow you to get too close to other cars, when a whole bunch of them were on the road (or probably test track) it resulted in much smoother driving, less needless acceleration/breaking etc.
I think in 50-100 years, when the majority of cars on the roads will be mostly driven, or at leases augmented by computers, there will be far less traffic issues, from jams to loads less accidents.
Just need people to accept the idea.

Yeah, if the world was 100% automated vehicles, there'd likely be virtually zero accidents.

But the world isn't like that. There are still Audi drivers. Horrible, balding tossers with an erectile dysfunction, who think the speed limit is a "minimum", driver everywhere in broad fucking daylight with their foglights on, never use their indicators and have their suit hanging in the back window on a coat hanger.

It's a transitional period, and judging from the number of None-Self-Driving cars that are out there, it's going to be one hell of a long time before we get to even a 50% augmented driver amount.
It'll take decades!!!

Rome wasn't built in a day. We'll get there. Maybe not in our lifetime (judging by how decrpit/old/ill we all are on this forum ), but it is the future.
