Nope, that wasn't working, 'cos the spacing was so large. I ended up with teensy tiny icons, and huge gaps between them.

Regedit : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
"Icon Spacing" and "Icon Vertical Spacing" are now both at -480, which gives a nice enough size.

(No idea why the value's negative.. .. Some idiot at MS probably thought they were being clever.)

Found a new thing to piss me off in Windows 10.

I like SNDREC32 from Windows 95 onwards - yes, I know I can use other tools; like a pencil artist uses pencils and not photoshop - it's his tool of choice.

I use it for editing all my SFX. I took the .EXE from my old machines and put it onto Win 8.XX machine and all was well - it complained about registry issues when first run, but no big deal. Now my 8.XX machine is Windows 10. I'm writing my first proper game in over a year and need to edit the sfx.

SNDREC32 loads up (same registry errors at first), plays sound yada, yada, yada. Try changing the sound or saving it and Windows 10 throws a "Not enough memory" error at me. Not enough memory? are you FUCKING kidding me M$? FUCK OFF! I can run plenty more apps right fucking now and save stuff in them, are you saying that the few extra (or less) kb that my change will make will kill my whole system due to lack of memory?

FUCK OFF!!

Just read about SNDREC32 on Wiki -

{QUOTE]This is a design flaw of older versions of Sound Recorder and officially cannot be resolved except by reducing the amount of available physical memory

So I have too much memory? :/ I haven't increased my memory since Windows 8.XX where it worked fine (it's the exact same laptop).

Anyway, thanks to an unofficial patch SNDREC32 is now working without errors. Sigh of relief

Yep, annoying when old tools start to show their age, isn't it!
I'm still not 100% happy with PaintShop Pro X7, which when compared to PaintShop Pro 7 (eg, 10 versions earlier) seems pretty much damn-near identical, except slower and more bloated..
Oh, and the colourise tool doesn't colourise properly.. I've had to recolour my sprites by hand.. Grrr...

Thing is, the tool isn't showing it's age - with the patch it works perfectly. And it's still better than the SNDREC they included with Windows 8.XX.

And you don't get it asking for you to review it in the AppStore like the new Calculator does!!

PaintShop Pro v7 started working, again, today.
I've been testing it every week or so, but it kept doing that same odd quitting thing.

Today, for some reason, it's working *mostly* fine..
The capture button's broken, which is a shame, but otherwise it loads up in a fucking instant, instead of the 2 minutes that PSPX7 takes, and also closes without giving me a fucking nagscreen asking me to upgrade to X8. (Seriously, Coral, it's taken me over a decade for this last upgrade.. And the upgrade is shit!!! Not gonna happen any time soon!!)

The only issue I ever had with psp7 on win 10 is that often some of the shortcut keys don't work well. For example I can't increase the colour depth via keyboard and have to use the menus.

Twain driver's working after today's updates.

Slowly but surely, Microsoft are actually fixing things.
It's a festivus miracle!

I've had to move the Tool Options box away into my 'sidebar' area (I use desktop coral to reserve the screen edge because a lot of software still is not designed for widescreen use and looks awful), because the semi-annual un-re-install is not fixing the 'will not roll-up' bug that happens.

Glad to know I'm not the only one to keep most of my programs in a 4:3 ratio!
In Windows/PaintShopPro, I use the little gap solely to place the pop-out Tool and Layer toolbars, but have them auto-hide.
I'd rather keep that area clear for things like that, rather than gadgets and the like.

Over on the Mac, Pixelmator Pro tends to use up the screen estate well enough, replacing the gap that I used to leave, with a giant Layers toolbar, alongside the Tool Options.. Pretty much exactly as I used to use PaintshopPro, except the two combined, always-open, and side-by-side, means they take up a little more space than I'd like.
