The Hole in My Head

The tumour* I had was nestled in a small area near the Fourth Ventricle.

It created it's own little space, and the fourth ventricle was squeezed to the point of it not being able to do it's job, which was apparently enough
for it to show as "a great big headache", but since I've lived with such migraines since a child, I never noticed anything different. .. Ho hum...

Once the tumour was removed, the fourth ventricle was supposed to expand back out and fill the hole, but apparently the hole is too big for the ventricle to fill.
Therefore, although the ventricle is now doing its job, the hole is still a hole, and all the fluid that normally runs around inside your head, is now swooshing about when it hits the big hole.

This is presenting much like an "Inner Ear" problem, and indeed that was the first things that they checked.
But when testing it, they found a rather worrying issue. If you tilt my head straight back (eg from seated upright, to lying flat on my back), my head goes ABSOLUTELY FUCKING MENTAL.. Eyes spinning, extra sickness, moments of consciousness.. Really scarily bad..
That's when they decided to look further into it, and after a few months of analysing the scans, they realised the ventricle wasn't doing the filling in.

So, yeah.. All my motion sickness is down to a great big hole in my head! And when I say I "Can't do VR", I'm really serious about that!!
Pisses me off, that I've had to miss out on that, though. Been looking forward to VR since the early 90s.

Bah, humbug..

Can't they fill it with cement/putty/expanding foam/blu tack or something?

Missing out on VR is better than being dead. I'd take that as a pretty good compromise tbh.

I'm not sure they wanted to try adding things inside the hole, in case anything worse happened. I mean, removing a tumour is one thing, as it's important to get the shit out ASAP!! But to then go back in and fill a hole, when realistically, it's not that big of an issue. That's a whole other thing.

Bodge a bit of Paxo in. Not only will it stop the vertigo, it can also be used as a tasty snack if you get hungry.

So if it wan't for the hole, then you're balance would probably be OK?

I’d imagine so, yeah. But that’s assuming there’s nothing else wrong in there.
I do seem to want to keep doing AGameAWeek, though, so maybe something more significant it wrong with my head!!

When my sister got knocked flying by a car years ago she had to have a blood clot removed, they used the original piece of skull they removed as a cap and then stapled the skalp back over that. It doesn't make any sense why they didn't just do the same for you Jay.

If you can just about cope with RL moving your head around not too fast, I think you may be able to do slow moving games in VR... as long as the system does lag!

It's possible.
But it's not worth the price of buying all the VR gubbins, if it doesn’t.

..plus, screw slow, I wanna play VR Wipeout!!!

The new Oculus Go may be a go (see what I did there )... better lenses, pretty cheap ($199) but its still not "proper" VR as it only has 3 DoF.

I’d also need a whole system to go with that, though. Dell laptop with cheapy onboard gfx ain’t going to cut it.

Nah, the Oculus Go is an all-in-one VR HMD, no external system needed... it's basically the newer version of the Gear VR but you dont need to have a Samsung phone it comes with everything you need.

Although I recommend you should wait for Santa Cruz to get 6 DoF if you are tempted to at least try it, but that is going to cost more... (again its an all-in-one HMD).

No release date for the Santa Cruz though...
