Socoder -> Off Topic -> Your Webhost(s)

So Garand made one about our computers. I thought it would be cool to make out about our webhosts. So, where do you get your hosting, what does it offer, are they reliable, and how much does it cost?

I get my hosting from 1and1. My package costs $5 a month, its paid every 6 months.

Diskspace: 120 GB
Bandwidth: 1,200 GB
Free Top Level Domains: 2
Subdomains: 50
Webmail: Yes
MySQL Databases: 100 MB (25x)
Scripts: Perl, Python, PHP3, PHP4, PHP5
IMAP & POP3: Yes
24/7 Phone Support Line

And a whole list of other stuff. The downside, support sucks really. I haven't had to much of a problem with downtime. Transfer speeds are pretty nice. And prices are very fair. I would recommend them.

Now how about everyone else?

i still don't get how servage can afford that much space? or 1and1... It's just seems completely unaffordable for any company to offer that sort of space

Dot5hosting.com

Budget hosting
300 GB of Hosting Space
3000 GB of Transfer
5000 POP Email Accounts
mysql db's unlimited

1 TLD included in package
6 add-on domains allowed
unlimited subdomains allowed
more info here

Support's been good though they tend to give you scripted answers and do not provide any suggestions. Also most things like adding on domains and subdomains is done through support which is slow, average response time is about 8-12hrs.

Control panel is so-and-so. Really basic and doesn't let you *really* get the most out of your hosting.

Other notable bad points:
# no email for addon domains
# php 4 - unwilling to upgrade
# no ssl connection from external email clients (available on webmail though)

Been with them for about a month, haven't really noticed any downtime yet.

Other than that, price's not bad - $4.95 per month if you're on a two year plan like me. Otherwise it's $6.95 for 6 months with a $7.95 setup fee.

Socoder : Godaddy.com
I'd heard a few bad things about GoDaddy, but, if it's good enough to host Top of the Pods, then I figured it'd be good enough to host a forum.

To be honest, I've not really found too many problems.

The webstats suck like crazy, but Google Analytics is as good a replacement as you can imagine.
Absolutely no issues with the SQL so far, which is nice.
And the only real issue I've had was a few days ago when for some inexplicable reason the FTP became completely inaccessable. (But the site stayed up, so that was ok!)

Support wise, I've tried asking a couple of questions, like
"That CPULoad figure seems to pop up and down at random, is there any way to find out what I'm actually using, so that I know it's not my script that's causing it." : "No."
"Is there a way to set up automatic SQL backups, including preferably a method of sending a backup to my GMail, so that I can use it as a huge backup archive?" : "No."
So that kinda sucks.

$79 for 12 months.. Bit on the pricey side, but it's GoDaddy, so you know it'll still be there in 12 months!

Like Garand, I use Servage.
(woo, 25GB free coupon here!)

It's the fastest I've ever used, uploading and downloading. FileZilla for FTP works great. Everything is very reliable, and very flexible in terms of the server management / domain name pointing.

I use it for my e-mail too.

Currently 435798 MB of space (435ish GB, depending on how you count)
And 3.6 TB (3600 GB) bandwidth - Something like 120 GB per day.

I'm using around 60 MB of all that space, and moving around 1-3 GB per month of my bandwidth.

Paid for 14 months, got 4 months free so far from referrals, so I'm only really just starting to begin my "paid for" term as up till now referrals had averaged one every two months, each one bringing two free months and 25 GB of extra space.

I've heard that there can be a problem if you move *huge* (and I mean huge) databases around - the limit is pretty much unlimited, but if you're reinstalling several years worth of huge databases in one go, apparently you can't and have to spread it over several days. Mind you, that's just one review I read.

The tech support people are sometimes a little robotic, but I think they're just working as quickly as they can and don't remember the e-mail you sent them two seconds ago.

All in all, I'm amazed and I love it.
£4.50 a month, paid all in one go for a 14 month term.
I use 1and1.co.uk for my domain name still, because I wanted to completely control it independently of my host. It's under £5 for two years.

Um... a 200MHz Pentium MMX home server, 256MiB Ram, and a 20GiB hard disk. Connected to the internet with a 1500/512k ADSL connection.

It's free, and I know the support people will answer.
