New ipad pro

I bought the new iPad pro 2022.

Yesterday I was looking at my previous one. I noticed there was not much room left on it. I was already thinking of upgrading so getting a bigger 256 gb model made it tip the scale.

It just finished installing everything. It went easier than the previous one. Most things were auto logged in and only a number of apps needed those inapps restored. There were no weird things happening this time.

Compared to the previous one, +35% gpu +10% cpu +40% ai processor. +50% memory speed. (Typed out of memory)

My programming code seems to have been copied onto the new device too. Vlc is empty though. Sprites were auto copied too.

When no mans sky get released I might give it a try.

Now to figure out a cunning plan to see what to do with it. The additional gpu power will be useful.

Eeek!
.. though I did consider it.
I don't sit at a desk, and a great big iPad might be a little bit "too" big for me.
Maybe if they do the smaller iPad Pro with the M2.

Oh.. they do...
I didn't notice that.
Thought it was only the 12"
Oh dear..
Oh no...

I have the small one. Apple is working on a huge 14 inch version for next year I read. And a foldable one. Those probably cost 3000 for the base model

I'm have been trying out that new windowed mode. Not sure how I would use that.

There's a sound detection feature. I turned on detection of sirenes. Maybe this might be useful for burglars ? Maybe it hears a lot better than humans.

On MacOS, I've not used StageManager as much as I thought I would.
It's handy when doing the daily Platdude pixelart, but other than that it's space I'd rather be using than wasting with a few thumbnails.

I must admit, I was expecting the Migration Tool to be a bucket of chaos, but ... Nope.
Wallpapers, settings, all my files, apps, everything.

Just like upgrading an iPhing, the transfer tool literally copied everything across, all except for the dodgy speakers on the old MacBook and with ample space to fit Xcode back on without freaking out that it's down to the last 64Gb of space!
It even copied across the installation of PHP8, and that was hacky at best to start with.

The only "Not logged in" tool seemed to be Ableton, but that was a quick click to get that done.
Damn...
That's fantastic!

|update| -=-=-=- |update|

... Except Launchpad. That's now a giant sprawling mess of icons that I have to rearrange again.
Damnit..

So you just got the macbook with the m2?

Air M2, 8Gb Ram, 512Gb Drive

Optimisationalism 3 is now averaging 44, whereas it was in the 90's on the M1.

Reasons I bought it.
1. I hadn't yet found anything worthy of a Xmas gift for myself. Was expecting a new VR headset, but nothing looked good/cheap. I'll hold out for Guest 3 I think.
2. That wonky speaker.. Man, the more I tried to do music on the MacBook, the more frustrating it got. This one is thankfully MUCH better.
3. Space. I was getting down to about 70Gb remaining, and was slightly worried No Man's Sky might've eaten that up!

The Air has an M2?

There's two models of Air, now.. The M1 and M2.
The low-end, base level M1 is perfectly fine. 8Gb ram, 256Gb drive. Sorted.
The low-end, base level M2 has a slower 256Gb drive, which is just dumb, so you end up having to go for the 512Gb model.
... You just know they did that on purpose!!

If you're after a cheap'ish MacBook, I'd recommend the M1 8Gb 256 model.
Otherwise, yeah, it's got an M2.

Mini Review
Nice feel.. Lovely colour. (Midnight Blue)
The speakers are kinda roundabout in the hinge or something. Makes for a better audio setup than having two small areas to the side of the keyboard, from the M1 Air.
Keyboard feels about the same, or at least I'm not noticing too much of a difference, other than the F'keys being full height instead of half height.
Magsafe seems to work ok, though .. *shrugs* I had no issues with the previous USB connector.

Have played a few Dolphin/Gamecube Emu tests, and all ran silky smooth.
Mmmm

...
Downside..
There's a notch.
I don't know why there's a notch.
People are like "Yeah, but the 12Mp camera!" and I'm like "I've NEVER used a webcam", so.. *shrugs*
The top menu bar is the height of the notch, so technically you aren't "really" losing anything..
.. You are, though. You're losing that bit there!! *points to the notch*

My experiences with the new ipad pro 2022 is that I have not noticed a difference at all. The only difference is that the battery lasts longer. That must be because it is new.

I have not been running tests or anything. The browser stil does not emulate sound on the web based Amiga emulator. There is no multicore support for javascript development either yet.

The file browser is buggy. It locked up a couple of times for a couple of minutes and started doing weird things. As did the coding editor. That system where apple checks for problems and reports those to base is enabled. So hopefully they wil make work of problems.

I was thinking of getting that populair video editor app. I can not remember its name. Make some game dev videos. I watched a tutorial already. A couple of my game dev videos have been having daily views every day for a couple of years now. But these were with the c-language. I'm not sure if I can make anything worthwhile in javascript.
Three.js is something I discovered when @jay showed it here. I'm slowly investigating and trying to get a hang with. The faster gpu on the m2 should make a difference.(Voxel platformer worlds)

Cool. I was thinking about getting a tablet as my daughter has pinched my old ipad mini and my Samsung Note tablet from a decade ago is no where to be found. Have no idea where I've stashed it.

I was going to go for an ipad mini again but shocked at prices today. I'm sure my wife's was in the £300 last year (or so) ago.

At the new prices my mind starts to wander into the territory of spending more to get something I could do more with, for example, Turbo Rascal runs on an M1 mac book really nicely (the author has one) so that seems a good idea

..but they're all so expensive and confusing as they seem to have so many versions of the same thing...

Ipad, ipad new, ipad Pro, ipad air, ipad air new, ipad mini. Arghhhh, I feel like I'm getting too old ... why so many options for the same thing?

(Clarification : Macbook Air has the M2's, iPad Air has the M1's)

I have the last iPad Air before it got the M's.. It's still fast enough for everything I do on it.
Luma Fusion is the video editor Pakz alluded to, and it flows just fine on this one, so I expect anything M-enhanced will be .. Smooth, too..!!

But only on a Tuesday ?

I really don't know what to go for. With keyboard, and pencil which I'd find hard to resist, I'd end up paying more than my laptop cost, or perhaps more than my gaming PC come to think about it.

Maybe I have to cut my expectations right down although £500+ for the mini doesn't feel justified for my budget ... *old man shakes fist at cloud and complains about the people who made the £pound tank fir the last six years...grrrr*

I like how ipads batteries hold out well, but maybe I should just buy a £50 amazon advert tablet for what I want to get out of it :-p

If it helps, I gave up using a keyboard with mine. I tried one of these funky things, and as good as it was, I found myself CONSTANTLY having to reach up to prod the screen. It completely buggered my wrist up within about a week.

I'm sure the proper Apple Magic Keyboard doohickey is better, and with recently improved iPadOS Mouse/Trackpad integration, it'd be even more functional, but .. Nah, it put me right off!!!

As for pencil. Haven't bothered. The iPad Screen's big enough for poking with my finger, though I'm not exactly an artist

I wouldn't go for a Mini, though. A mini's too small. If you're buying a tablet, get a tablet sized tablet!!
You likely WOULD need a pencil for a mini!

I've never owned an iPad. Never been sure if I'd use it or not.

My opinion..

A large touchscreen allowed me to up my artistry game from 0.3% to at least 0.7%
Prodding pixels is much more natural than mouse/trackpad based pixel plotting.

Music editing is.. .. Manageable. Korg Gadget gets the interface right, building it from the ground up with fingers in mind, but a lot of other apps seem to use a clunky "Your finger is the mouse" interface and it breaks the logic. Don't get me started on trying to use a MOD editor. Oh boy, do those desperately need a keyboard!!!

Most of my daily browsing is done sat on the couch with an iPad in my hand, and pretty much all my media consumption is nowadays through the iPad... But with the caveat that I'm very much sat in my bedroom alone.. Trying to share an iPad screen is kinda hellish!!

Music is also played via the iPad. I tend to fire up my "Homely Choons" playlist on shuffle, and leave it on for most of the day. Does the job. (Almost 2,000 tracks from various NOW compilations, TOTP playlists and more, all compiled into a giant playlist, and if anything shite pops up it gets deleted!!)

It's very much the hub of a lot of the things I do. Mum's got one, too, plays Shoebox games, and does Facebook, and occasional email and such. She's happy with it!

Whether you'd use it would be based on the time you get to spend on computers.
If you have very little time, you might find an iPad better suited.. Grab, check your mail, check the important things online (SoCoder threads!) and then plop it back down again.
But then your time becomes less about spending the little time you have playing a relaxing and enjoyable arcadey game, and instead ...picking up another computer and ending up replying in forums, and then all your time's gone..

*shrugs*

I don't tend to listen to music - I generally turn everything off and live in silence when at home alone. I like drawing with my mouse, I can't imagine using my fingers tbh. i have my phone for quick arcade games. I like the keyboard for typing. So an iPad is probably not for me then

I don't mind pushing my confort zone, and I really want to do more, but at the price they're going for nowadays, and Apple's deliberate obsolence of devices, it's too much of a push.

Yeah, spending as much as I did on the MacBook, then buying another 2 years later.. That's not something I ever reasonably thought I'd be doing, and it's kinda scary that I have.

Having said that, if my Mum's iPad hadn't crapped its pants (it was the battery, btw.. Uncle Jimmy eventually got it up and running, about 5 months later!!) then she'd still be on that iPad, and I'd still be on my previous one.
My previous one is the one Mum currently has, and it's running just as well as it ever did.
I'd say, on average, they have about 5 or 6 years in them, except for the rare occasions when something catastrophic happens for no apparent reason (said battery being one of those times)

It's definitely not a good path to be sucked into, though..

I like the minis because they are not huge. More portable, bigger than a phone without being a laptop size. You know, pick up and use for something specific, whether I'm on my laptop at the time (looking at documentation or website) or just while watching TV. I do watch more YouTube and twitch these days so would be convenient for that.

I've had a pen with previous tablets and phones (samsumg notes) and also my laptops. Perfect for many scenarios where you'd instinctively want to use a pen instead of a finger or mouse. It's not a replacement for those things though, I still use a mouse for general use and strangely for pixel drawing (most of the time) - I think 30 plus years of practice has welded the mouse to my hand for that activity!

I suppose do I really need one? Can I manage without and save the cash for more important things? I can get a small discount though and I do love gadgets. Decisions....

Macbook M2 (ARM) running UTM (A virtual machine doohickey) running Windows 11 Arm Preview edition, running FR-025 compiled for X86.
It's not silky smooth, but it does at least run, as does PSP7!
Might be time to switch off the old MacMini, if I can run Windows directly on here.

I was looking at how Linux is getting a lot better running things like Windows games from Steam. The Steam Deck, which reviews I was watching on youtube, can exit to a linux os that it is running on. This got me looking at Linux.

I was also looking at a cover/keyboard for the iPad pro. There is a good 'cheap' Logitech touch with keys and touchpad. It needs no charger as it connects to some click thingy on the iPad.

I spent until late at night working from a Three.js book. Trying to understand 3d in javascript on ipados. A big problem is that the book is for the Three.js version of 2018. Some things got cut from the language, so google is needed.
I'm getting close to making a whole procedural Voxel World. Need to figure how to build Meshes with texture atlas.

But first try to do 60km of cycling this morning

I was looking at SteamDeck a few weeks ago, but ultimately decided against it.
The default system won't run AudioSurf, and that was enough to put me off it.
