YouTube.
No, really.
Watching a LetsPlay on YouTube is SUCH a great way to get feedback. You get realtime thoughts, and, more importantly, you can SEE why the player's having the issues they have.

And you get ALL the issues.
You don't get "On level 7 I fell down a pit and couldn't get out of it."
You get to see that at the start of level 3 they didn't collect the hover-gem that would've helped them to get out of the pit on level 7.
Or that on level 5 they accidentally used the hover-gem whilst trying to get up to that one platform that you left out of reach on purpose, so they could come back later, once they'd earned the jetpack.

Question of the Day : January 13th

How do you approach balancing gameplay difficulty?
Mon, 13 Jan 2025, 02:45
Jayenkai
That's a toughy. People frequently complain about the difficulty levels of my games, so I guess "really quite badly" would be the answer to that.

Thing is, I've frequently said that if I made games with a Tutorial, Level 1, Level 2 structure, that playing them weekly would get real old, real fast.
.. But .. Maybe I should think about doing that more.
After all, not everyone's playing every game, every week.

Question of the Day : January 16th

What's a book, movie, or album that inspires you?

You know, I'd love to do something expansive, like Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
I'm really not sure where to even begin doing something like that, though.
I guess I'm not inspired enough!

Question of the Day : January 20th

Do you use version control, and if so, what do you recommend?
Mon, 20 Jan 2025, 02:53
Jayenkai
AGameAWeek doesn't really suit Version Control, since by the time a couple of days have passed, the game's practically finished.
Could probably have used it for JSE.. That's not exactly been a rapid-dev thing! But so far I haven't tripped up, so I think I'm ok.
...
I'll probably break everything, now, having said that.

Nope, that's why I sometimes loose a months work on a project

I recommend using version control.

I use git and github. Nice and easy in VSCode and I use github desktop to manage my Vic 20 code without having to mess with a million command line commands.
