Socoder -> Off Topic -> The Meeting

Hm.
Sitting at my cousins' place right now, with not a whole lot to do when I get home, except for maybe going to a music festival for a week. And judging by the 'What's everyone up to?' topic, it doesn't seem like anyone else is doing a whole lot this summer, either.
So, I was thinking - how about organizing one of those meetings that were organized by CodersWorkshop and BlitzCoder?
I'm not really sure where we'd meet, but somewhere around Jay's place seems natural. I know his mum's got an unused loft in their apartment, and I'm sure that Jay could look into conference rooms nearby if the loft's too small. Whaddaya think, Jay? It couldn't hurt to look at least, if people'd be willing to spit in a few quids for renting a conference room.
As far as 'program' goes, I've been thinking about a few things:

- Drinking!
- Conferences about programming stuff. I know I could make a Powerpoint presentation about Network programming, and Instinct could probably do some C# presentation.
- Selling/presenting products and games.
- Meeting people!
- A combination of all of the above.

If anyone's got any more ideas, any input, or just wanna say that they'd like to come, please reply below!
I know I would come, and if people need my help with anything, just let me know, I'd be willing to do my share.

Latest Update(s)

Instinct is going to look for conference rooms, and the (semi)confirmed attendants so far are:

- Me
- Hobo
- Instinct
- Orion
- stealthspc

Count me out on all overseas activities. It doesn't appear that I'll be going back to the UK for a while.

I do always like hearing about these things though.

Sounds exciting, but it's a lot easier just to lounge around in the mud chat with a few pints within arms reach.

A live mud-chat tutorial might be fun though

The issue is that we're not all near each other!
A meet would involve so very few of us, it'd just seem a waste to bother trying.

Yeah, if i were in the UK then i'd make something, but i start college in 7 days, and will be buisy with that for a while...

In a year or two I plan on studying abroad, *possibly* in the UK, just because they speak english, and learning computer science in a foreign language doesn't seem like a good idea to me!

There's a lot of group presentation programs out there, maybe we could do what hobo suggested..

I wouldn't be able to either, on the grounds that I'm under 16... but something in the Mud-Chat would be cool...

Who remembers SoCodeAThon? Maybe we could revive that...

Hm.
This might be a stupidly stupid idea, but Group Presentation Programs and SoCodeAThon aside, it seems there are alot more of us in the US than in Europe!
So how about moving from Jay's place, to, say, Instinct's? Or blanko's? Would anyone be willing to look into conference rooms? And/or hotels?

Edit: Am I correct if I say that such a meet would at least involve me, Instinct, Orion Pax, blanko and Tikihead? Then that's certainly a start! How about you, Jay?

Edit: Hobo, feel like crossing the seas?
Edit: I realize you're starting college, Instinct, but it's gotta be possible to work out a date that'd work for you? Like in a weekend? As a matter of fact, if all of us Europeans are going to cross seas, I'd suggest that we have the meeting during the course of two days, preferably in a weekend.

Yes, I'm sure it's much easier to get a few people from opposite sides of a huge continent together, than it is a few from tiny britain..

Jay: That's not the message I'm getting. All these Americans are saying that they'd like to come, but that they can't cross the seas. They didn't say anything about crossing a continent! Besides, how do you know they're all on opposite sides, anyway? If more people from UK or Europe had even bothered responding, then things would be different, but so far... it seems the Americans are the ones more interested in this!
So, bottom line; Are you willing to cross seas or not?

Edit: Last question was mainly directed at Jay, but I'd honestly be disappointed if I was the only European up for it. C'mon guys, jump on a plane!

yeah... I'm in florida -- I think there's maybe one other person that's even in the same time zone as me. You've got to remember that 1 state in the US is pretty much the size of 1 country in europe.

I can't make a meet-up, even if it's in the UK. That's why I didn't reply.

*Sigh*

Could you at least make it to Heathrow or Stanstead on your own, so I wouldn't have to travel to Wales to pick you up? Instinct, find a bloody conference room and write a 3 hour presentation on C# - we're coming to Florida!
Jay, are you coming too, or am I going to have to personally come down and kick your balls before leaving for the US?
That goes for all you Americans as well - get to Florida! (Or this is gonna be the smallest meetup in the recorded history of meetups ever)

Edit: Hobo, PM me your email-address so I can send you the e-ticket when I've gotten word from Instinct. Instinct: While you're at it, could you help me with hotels? If not I could find some on my own, if you reply in this topic or PM me about the specific city you live in. As a matter of fact, I think I should handle hotels, so I could call and ask if we could get cheaper rooms if lots of people are coming from the US as well.
Edit: I shouldn't even have to say this, but Instinct - could you work on finding a couple dates that'd work for you in terms of College?

Wow, Afr0, I wasn't expecting you to take me seriously on the "buy me a ticket" line!

Before anyone even *considers* buying tickets, could we actually get a rough date at the very least?

Just so you know I was at work today. On fathers day of all days I had to work. At any rate, I hate to say it, I cant take a road trip any where at the moment unless its the 18th,19th or 20th of july. I got those days off from work for my birthday which is the 17th. those 3 days are fri,sat and sunday.... And since my wife will have her check from the government 2 weeks before I can afford to take those 3 days off from work. So unless its those days and I am still not sure I can do it. I have 2 kids, a wife and my mother in law to take of. lol. I will at least look into it. But not making any promises.

I'll re-launch it if there is a demand for it.

Probably needs a bit of recoding so it doesn't crash like before.

Ok, guys, here's the latest status update!

Instinct is going to look for conference rooms, and the (semi)confirmed attendants so far are:

- Me
- Hobo
- Instinct
- Orion
- stealthspc

We're not sure about the age limit for transatlantic flights yet, but I'm looking into that and posting it as soon as I find! If anyone else would like to come, DO SAY SO! Magicman, perhaps?

Edit: Tikihead??

Whats this SOCODATHON about?
Sun, 15 Jun 2008, 18:35
Stealth
SoCode-A-Thon was where we all got together on like Friday night and coded and chatted. We had a site setup that we got on for it, but it's since been taken down. (I was the one that created it.)

So if there is an interest in it, I'll relaunch it (probably after a quick redesign).

Edit: Looks like I'll be staying at a Marriott hotel, in a King Suite which includes a Whirlpool (Yay!) for only 199USD/Night. It can take max 3 persons, and me and Hobo are possibly staying there, unless he's bringing his tent (), and so there's room for 1 more!! Scream out guys!

Edit: Seems stealthspc might get the last spot if he's coming!

Also, linky for myself: Marriott
