Turbo Rascal makes it as simple as developing for a modern system.

Write code in a high level language and add in your own assembler routines if you want to. That's just one part of the process, for development on any 8-bit or 16-bit system you also have to learn the hardware. For me this has been a joy to revisit old machines I used growing up and with the amount of documentation and help available today it is so much easier to do.

There's not much I don't know about the Vic 20 now, learning more about the C64 and Amstrad CPC right now. Shame these skills will not translate directly to the modern workplace, or make my fortune, but it is good experience (especially for optimisation) for any programmer so I would recommend having a go to anyone interested

In assembly and figuring out where the hardware bits are, then read and write to memory.

It's so different to modern coding stuff.

Question of the Day : February 17th

How do you create a compelling story in a game?
Fri, 17 Feb 2023, 00:57
rockford
Do games need compelling stories?

I'd say that to most games the story (if there is one) is irrelevant and tacked on. For some, there is a definite need to move the game forward with some kind of narrative, but for me, pretty much every fave game I have lacks a story or has a very simple one, eg - "Rescue XXX"

Absolutely!!
As much as other people lament Zelda:BOTW for not having an in-depth storyline, that's one of the reasons I loved it as much as I did.
I do hope Tears isn't going in the opposite direction.

I haven't tried to do such a thing to be honest, I prefer to make shorter games anyways.

Question of the Day : February 18th

Are you afraid of robots?
Sat, 18 Feb 2023, 03:08
rockford
We have robots zipping around Milton Keynes all the time. They are not frightening, they are just bloody annoying. They get in the way constantly and won't budge once they sense your presence. You have to yield to them. The war of the robots has started. Luckily they're as dumb as fuck. For now...

I don't think so, no. I didn't know they were in the UK!
I wouldn't expect them to get far through Little Lever without the yobs and jackasses smashing them to pieces..

We thought that about Milton Keynes. There has been some trouble, but they've been here for a good couple of years now and they are increasing, significantly, in number.

They cost around £1.00 - £1.50 to deliver, so cheaper than Tesco et al if all you need is a few bits. They also talk and sing to the recipient on successful arrival/delivery.

What's the best hangover cure?
Mon, 20 Feb 2023, 01:50

Never had a hangover, so never needed to compare cures.

Drink a couple of pints of water a couple of hours before sleep, you will wake up with no hangover because your brain will be sufficiently hydrated.

Question of the Day : February 22nd

Have you ever lied about your age?
Wed, 22 Feb 2023, 02:04
Jayenkai
No, but I very often forget my own age. Guess that's an age thing.
Oddly, whenever I do have to try to remember my own age, I usually end up making myself older.
