I was listening to Radio-1 news earlier, laser pens may be re-classified as "offensive weapons". So what am I supposed to tease my mate's cats with now ?

I think they should be banned except for where they're needed. No use for them.

They do have a use, as I just stated, they are brilliant for teasing cats with. Have you ever seen a cat climb up a curtain before ?

Canterbury is very student dominated, so we have lots of experience with laser pens. Great for lectures, but very annoying when your walking along and people shine them at you from across the road.

But even then I think this is a bit much. I would be up for allowing police forces to conviscate them, without reason, from kids who are outdoors. But I wouldn't be up for classifying them as an offensive weapon. A brick can be an offensive weapon (and is far more deadly then a laser pen).

Only really strong ones will be banned. Regular ones will be fine. It's apparently because people are pointing them at aircraft.

the problem with the laser pens is that they are unregulated/ CE approved etc imports from china, they dont have IR filters and the glare from them is just as damaging as the laser light itself.

they work by shining an IR LED on to a crystal that is basically a freqency doubler, but the IR light is not filtered in most cases and is invisible but still damaging.

People here are always bringing them to school and shining them in peoples' eyes. They bring the powerful ones too.

It gets frustrating to avoid them.
