Socoder -> Off Topic -> Reading Clearer

I like the new editor, but when you view someone else’s code (not the actual main editor) it seems to mess up the Windows ClearType tuning on Firefox only, with the text coloured oddly.

Minor problem, but I wonder why it happens?

When the text is white, on black, it'll figure out per-sub-pixel bits and pieces, but once you've taken a screenie of it, you're no longer dealing with subpixels. Windows no longer knows where those subpixels are/should be, so it just does them as full pixels, which leads to the odd colour oddball freakouts above.

I spent my formative years computing with Apple ][s. That subpixel coloration is NOTHING.

I know taking a screenshot of it messes it up, but if you zoom right in you can see it's out... the number 1s are *entirely* green.

You can actually fix many clear type issues on FireFox by applying a text-shadow; even if it's so minor it can't be seen. I think FireFox is just rendering with a very low quality setting.

However I'll look into this. I will look into adjusting the color a little.

|edit| Further in regards to the text shadow; we've already had to tone down the CSS for FireFox due to it rendering incorrect (it was entirely messed up on Mac OS) because it was too expensive. So I won't be adding a text-shadow on text. |edit|

I've just checked on Windows XP in FireFox 4.0.1 (on my little eee), and it is all rendered fine with cleartype on and off. This is for both places where code is shown.

@Ben, are you running the latest FF and do you have any more info that might help?

Firefox 4.0.1/Windows XP

However, the problem goes away once I use the scrollbar (even scrolling back to exactly the same place).

Perhaps a simple tweak to make the thing redraw once would fix it.
