The news!

What do you think? Will it run Windows 7 into a ditch?
Or will it become the new Linux?
And what about Apple?

From what I've read, all it is is a new linux distro. It won't do anything to Microsoft or Apple.

Having Google branding is a BIG advantage that other distros don't have. Also unlike all the other distros, this one seems to be trying to do something original!

might mean better Linux hardware supprt in future with any luck. though I don't really expect google's OS will catch on, much like the browser.

About 30 million people use Google Chrome already. I'd say that's "catching on."

What companies is Google working with to support Google Chrome OS?
The Google Chrome OS team is currently working with a number of technology companies to design and build devices that deliver an extraordinary end user experience. Among others, these companies include Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba.

Not really a new idea, I remember using FreeDOS with the Arachne web browser as the desktop. It had email, file manager built in and an interface for web apps! Loads of plugins for video and stuff too.

In many ways Google seem to be taking on Microsoft for the sake of taking on Microsoft. These types of battles are rarely profitable, even for the winning company. It also makes me really dislike Google. They say don't be evil, they encourage co-operating with competitors to make money for both parties whilst at the same time they just hate Microsoft.

Google seems to try to expand into all different kinds of areas; with their Microsoft Office web clones, the Wave protocol, Chrome and now an OS.

I really hope that this new OS doesn't really take off though (i.e. more than just a couple of percentages of market share), because if it does we'll see another segmentation in software compatibility. I use Windows because practically everything useful works on it. I rarely find programs that don't work with Windows but when I do, I become pretty irritated. What if lots of only-works-on-Chrome-OS programs appear? Then I can't run those, unless I decide to switch OS, or have two computers, or use an emulator of some sort. All very unamiable choices.

I really don't think that's going to happen. Google Chrome OS will be open source(ed), and will be built on top of a Linux kernel from what I gather. 90% of the programs released for the OS will be open source, and, given the track record of the Linux community, someone will most likely convert the program(s) to Windows.

Yeah, well I'm not really expecting it to happen. But I'm just considering that Google has a lot of money to push things with, and I don't like the notion of yet another OS to break us poor programmers apart.

If Chrome is what I expect it to be, it will be predominantly web-based, and therefore program computability will rely on W3C standards. I don't know if any of you have ever seen Mozilla Prism, or that one Google app that did the same thing, but it made web apps look like normal on-your-computer applications. Most likely, this is the route Google will take.

Especially since, in the Chrome browser, they built an entire javascript emulator, I think they're banking on web as being "the application framework" for all these computers. It'll be like a netbook, and you'll use Google Docs to do your word processing and spreadsheets, picassa to manage your photos, google talk to chat with people, google calendar and gmail for your date organizations and e-mail. Hell, there's even Google Health now, (give google all your medical records; great idea, right?)

The Chrome OS will just be a way to solidify the monopoly on a computer. I can almost guarantee it.
