That's right, Cobra demos are out!

And not just for the lucky few (moi! :-p ) that got it early... Nope, just register at the site... Or if you already have, log in and download the demo!

Ben,

the download link keeps breaking off.

It worked for me. I could e-mail the demo to you.

But I'm not very impressed. I tried drawing lots of images all over the screen and my results are over 10 times slower then the equivalent in Blitz3d. PixelFast compared to writePixelFast was also slower, but the difference wasn't as big.

I like that the syntax appears to be slightly more strict then Blitz3d, which is a good thing. But both documentation and the ide need work, mainly to make it more presentable. I also don't like some of the command names, but it's just one or two like selWidth/Height. I'm was really unsure what it would return from the documentation, and I'm now unable to figure out how to find the graphics height/width of the window I make.

To be fair I've barely used it, only done these drawing tests. These are also done with the debugger on, which I can't figure out how to turn off. Even then Blitz is still around 10 times faster with it's debugger on.

edit: Saying all that might sound harsh and it also goes against one of my rules with programming, that speed is only a problem when it is a problem. My point is however, Cobra at first glance seems very similar to Blitz3d just alot slower.

thank you, DiablosDevil.

it had something like unexpected end of archive or some type of format error.

will send ya a PM.

thanks again,

if and when I get Cobra, install it and get it going
I'll test it on both my Compaq Presario computer and also my HP computer.

wouldn't it be funny and ironic...that it goes really fast and smooth on both of my computers!??

cheers,

Well I'm not trying to say it's slow or that it's bad because it's supposidly slow. It's just not nearly as fast as Blitz3d.

The main aspect that puts me off is more that with this in mind I don't see what I would gain from Cobra over Blitz 3d. Again I'm not trying to put it down, but if I (metaphorically) have Microsoft Office why should I bother getting Open Office?

Diablosdevil,

I sent you a PM. At times, the PM is not working.

Also, I sent you an email from my Aol account. Sometimes that is quirky or messes up too. You know about AOL. It can be AWOL at times.

i'LL try my other email account and send it over to yours.

like right now,

cheers,

-->email from lycos.com is sent to you.

Hey Kent,

I didn't get your PM's. I got your e-mails, but I decided it would be better to simply upload the Cobra Demo somewhere.

Enjoy.

thank you.

I'll try, try again. I tried but with IE and almost..just almost got it all downloaded. But only 7 megabytes.

I'll try this link.

Diablo,

dude!! I don't know what is wrong. There has to be something wrong or the file is affecting my download in both AOL browser and IE web browser. Yes, I turned off my spyware and my firewall programs just to download this dang thing.
Even with all my firewall, spyware, adware, virus protections on...I had no problem downloading the BlitzMax and DBPRO demos. And also other programming languages and game engines too. And they are many more megabytes longer than the 8.32 megabyte Cobra download.

Maybe, the Fates have decreed not for me to code with Cobra but to sat with Blitz 3d, DBPRO, and also the Hydra and the up n coming Hypercube: the XGS 2.
maybe agent smith was right...go onward to Forth and other programming languages too.

thank you for helping me...or trying too. I'll finish my pyramid program in Blitz 3d. hey, maybe I should just get BlitzMax. huh!?

cheers, again

I need to fix the PM's!

I thought I had, but I guess not..

I'm gonna try and get a bit more sleep, but I'll give Cobra a go later. (But knowing me, I probably won't be able to sleep thinking about trying out the Cobra demo..)

Jay,

please don't lose any sleep. According to Diablosdevil...your not missing much.

I was just looking forward to try out and play around with the demo. And hopefully, write more or less a favorable review. If not, then a negative but honest review.

But the Fates again have decreed otherwise.

plus...my magical, mystical mousey intution tells me not to bother with Cobra...but to concentrate on Blitz3d, the Hydra and also the up n coming XGS 2 as well. Okay, I will.
Nuff said or posted. true.

cheers,

I don't know what's up Power Mousey. I presumed it had uploaded fine, maybe it hasn't. I just tried three times to download the file and each time it failed to complete.

I am however currently downloading 'Star Trek: Birth of the Federation', as my genuine copy was scratched when I recieved it and only installs in German. As a result my bandwidth generally seems pretty slow, so I think this is why it is cutting out for me.

edit: It also occured to me I've failed to recieve a PM from PM. If only it wasn't AM where I am, I could use PM a third time.

maybe...as you say about the bandwidth being slow.

and hey about the PMs and the Ams too. I need more sleep on both...and will sleep more cause of Christmas vacation true.

I wonder if Graham is going to make a copy to other sites...such as Tucows, Programmersheaven, even thefreecountry.com and other shareware sites. I think Merry Ole England is too far and merry for me here in San Jose.
and what with the storms and cold, power outages and black-outs, the bandwidth issue, and maybe other things too.

a mug of Ale for you,

@DiablosDevil
Hi there,
It's a little unfair commenting on speed after a quick test.
Remember Cobra <> Blitz, if you do things exactly like blitz it will be slower, if you use cobra features it can be faster.

A couple of examples, in blitz you draw everything in Cobra you use sprites for pretty much anything eg. backdrops, game characters etc.

Feel free to post code over on the squeakyduck forum, and I'll show you how it can be 'cobraized' if you wish

believe me, I take DiablosDevil word. It is reliable.

however, I still would like to download the Cobra demo...and give it a try. Its interesting and I like to try it out.

Who knows?... maybe it would work better on both of my computers. If I can ever download the thing.

hey everybody,

I think there could be something wrong with the Cobra zip file. Right now, I have overloaded my computer by listening to some music and downloading 3 other programming languages
and running my AOL virus scan and spyware program, and all at the same time.
Alright!...2 of the downloads our complete. No broken download connections. I'll download some more. Of course, my computer is a little slow...but its working.

There could be something wrong with the zip file format on with some computers. Other than that...who knows!!
Maybe its time for Blitz Max or something else.

anyway,
time to download some more stuff too

cheers,
power mousey

I downloaded Cobra Demo earlier. I like what I see, especially the fact that stuff can be drawn to the screen without there being a window. Is there going to be a 3D version ?.

*Taps F5.. Oh, FFS! Again!!*
They have GOT to make Compile = F5!

Other than that, I'm slowly getting used to it...

I don't know what's happening with the google link I posted. It breaks for me too, but it says it's a full 8mb on the google site.

@GrahamK
It's not my intention to put down Cobra based on speed tests, I do use Ruby which is way slower. Despite everything I've said over the last months I don't have anything against Cobra. Infact the reason I make these comments is because I have taken an interest.

Hey, just a quick postie as I've gotta run.

Diablo, the debugger isn't able to be turned off in the demo. I'll probably be buying the full version, so I'll let you know how that compares without the debugger.

Power Mousey... Maybe using WinRar (from rarlab.com I think) instead of WinZip to uncompress might be better, if you're using that one.

Have fun, everyone.
