Can anyone suggest which programming tools would be best for placing one or two png images on my desktop (with transparency, always on bottom) allowing only a systray icon and any mouseclicks to pass through to the desktop?

Borderless transparent WPF window (will probably block mouse clicks), or you can do what some applications do which is create a copy of the desktop wallpaper, draw the image over it at logon, and set it as a new wallpaper.

edit: With Vista and Windows 7 there might be a better way with Windows Desktop Gadgets (called Windows Sidebar in Vista). With Windows XP and earlier, you would use Active Desktop. Obviously this means more work to support more than one platform.

I already tried with gadgets, the problem there, is that I have a sidebar gadget which automatically sucks any near gadgets into itself, which kinda destroys what I'm after.
I'm using a dreamscene background (video), so drawing directly onto the wallpaper is out also.

|edit| You know what, I found Samurize, it seems to do the trick, even able to put a clock on the screen too
