So, the PC finally turned up, and yes.. It's got Vista!
Took me a while to figure out how to change the "Computer Workgroup" name, so that it can connect to my other PC's files.
Now that I can access everything ok, I can get around to working on the site. But I'll probably spend most of today playing around with Vista and Doubleposting on this topic everytime Vista does something to annoy me.

I'd post an image of the silly explorer window, but I haven't installed Paintshop Pro yet.

I'll do that shortly, so here's something to get you all started.

Before, if I accidentally unrar'd a bunch of files into a directory that already contained a bunch of files, it's contents would appear below the files that were already there, so that I could tell which files were extracted. That way I could quickly highlight all the lower files, and delete/move/whatever.
Now Windows is "Better", so it automatically re-alphabetises the list every time new files are added.
Stupid damn technology...

Having now taken the new PC upstairs, I've just spent about an hour or so trying to get my network to work correctly.

Not really sure what's wrong with it, but it's definately being a git.

My Internet seems to want to connect to either the new PC or the one downstaiors, but not both..

Check the firewall Jay. Seems likely.

Windows has detected blah, cancel or allow!!

Still haven't figured out the internet thing. I'm thinking maybe that ICS on WinXP Home might only allow 1 network connection to share another, not two..
(Broadband -> PC, -> LAN 1 + LAN 2!)
Anyhoo..

A few annoying "Explorer" things.

Many many years ago, I purchased Paintshop Pro 7 when I spotted it in PC World. It surprised me, since I'd not actually seen a boxed copy of the thing before, and I figured I'd probably used PsP5 demo more than enough times.

When I got my next PC, it annoyed me that I lost all of my PSP settings, like my pallets and selection sizes, so from that day on, rather than reinstall from scratch, I've been copying the directory from one PC to another, and keeping all my lovely settings intact. (Although I still have to rearrage the toolbars and things.. Bah, humbug!)

First off, I head into C:\program files\ and make a directory.

Me : "New / Folder"
Vista : You need to confirm this operation
Me : Huh.. Must be 'cos it's in Program Files. "Continue"
Vista : Windows needs your permission to continue!
Me : o_O Fair enough. "Continue"

Now I rename the directory..

Me : "Jasc Software Inc."
Vista : You need to confirm this operation
Me : !!!! "Continue"
Vista : Windows needs your permission to continue!
Me : Oh, FFS!! "Continue"

Windows Vista is certainly secure..

Nothing noticable so far!
I'm having to click about 10 things to get to the good old fashioned Dialog boxes for Control Panel.
That's fun..

Just installed RealVNC so that I can access both PC's from the same system.. That's working really quite well.
Next step in the ".... This'll take AGES ...." list of things to do is to copy everything over to the New PC and then format+reinstall on the old one.
Hopefully the format will allow me to get the whole network thing running like it should be. If not, the Wifi seems to have been unaffected, so I'll probably go all Wifi instead.

Blitzwise things seem mostly unaffected. I've had a few "Are you sure you want to run this?" things pop up, but I'm pretty sure that's because I'm running things over the network.
If I copy them directly to this system, they seem to run without asking me. So that's good.

Worktime now. Bah, humbug..

I'll leave the 2 systems copying hundreds of ludicrously large files, whilst I'm there.
When I get back, though, I've plenty more things to install, starting with my DS Devkit stuff.
Wonder if that'll work...?

I've been thinking... I should probably give Linux a go on the old system.
Can you do Internet Connection Sharing easily from a Linux installation?

StealthSPC So does that mean there will be site updates?

No!!

Of course!
Now I've a PC that isn't going to crash every 10 mins (or, it better well not do, anyway!) I can get back to updating things properly.
I've a list of PM's from various users asking for all sorts of things to be fixed, so I'll get doing all those, once the PC's in a nice usable way!

Hey, have you got Cobra yet/are you planning to?

Sorry, no Cobra yet. I might do, but I've got plenty of Site to fix, and then I've also got my Alien breed game, which has yet to have a line of code written for it. Can't wait to get started on that.

First up, sorting out more cables!
Sound's all freaky coming out of the headphones. Must fix.. (Had been using the TV's output all day so hadn't noticed)

But how many people program with Cobra? I predict seriously, none. But we have one Ruby enthusiast, so why not a Ruby section?

Unless lots of people here start programming with Cobra, such as to C++ of Blitz proportions, I see no point for it to be added.

So how does Vista compare? Is it more constricting to customize the real system then Windows XP? They ought to add an 'advanced' option on installation so it won't hide Windows, give you the simple control panel page and so on as default.
Fri, 16 Feb 2007, 15:38
Jayenkai
There probably IS a "Real Windows Options" option somewhere. Just haven't found it yet!

Is it worth the upgrade? Probably not, to be honest. But then I've not really dug in deep yet. I was never really a fan of XP's New "Features" so.. Meh.

As for the Cobra/Ruby thing, I figured Cobra would be bigger than it is. Give it time, till at least the 3D version emerges, then we'll see how well it does.

If you want a Ruby section, I guess I'll have to add one for you

Occasionally I get a flicker on my screen, followed by a warning that the Display Driver has failed, and had to restart.
Usually flickers for a couple of frames, then the message box fades in and out. Not TOO noticable, but.. It's there.
Kinda weird.

I'm assuming that A) the Driver sucks, and B) It's 'cos it's an onboard sucky gfx card.

The downstairs PC has been weirding out lately, so I figured I may as well strip it.
I nicked it's lovely GeForce 5700 and switched it back to Plain-old Onboard, then ran upstairs giggling and opened up my new PC.

Yeay. Super graphics.. (Or at least "Not Onboard")

Ooh, what's this sticker say?

"This PCI-E slot.."

..

Bugger.

Since I last purchased a graphics card, some idiot decided to change the slots..

*sigh*

Can't be bothered putting the gfx card back, now, so it's just sitting on my desk. I'll play about with it later.
Guess I need to go buy a new one, eh!

Control Panel / Performance Information and Tools
This gives you your Windows System Score.
"The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1.0 to 5.9"
Mine is 3.2
The processor is 4.7, Memory 5.2, Hard Drive 5.4, but the graphics let it down, with both "Desktop Performance" and "3D Business and Gaming" getting 3.2. Shame..
I almost had a half decent score!

So, without a gfx card, I can't hook up to my TV. (Grrr)
Guess Old-PC will have to have a secondary function! As well as being a file-server, it's going to be my Telly-Sender for when I want to sit back and watch something on a slightly larger screen. Well, it will do until I get myself a decent PCI-E card, anyway.

Sound's all hooked up.
Old PC gets all the main inputs from the various consoles around the room, then sends all it's input and it's own output over to New PC which then mixes everything with it's own sound, sends it all to A) Headphones, B) TV and C) New PC's nice LCD Monitor, all at the same time.

And all it needed was an extra wire, and about an hour of untangling various bits and bats from behind the old PC.
..
Having said that, the two PC's are right next to each other and there's no room to swing my legs about, under the desk.

I'm contemplating cutting a large section of my desk away, to fit a bunch of cables through!

|edit| Oh, and if you're wondering why I'm typing a lot tonight, it's because I can type and have the PC keep up with me for a change! It's great |edit|

Mousey, that is brilliant. But I am not seriously suggesting a Ruby section (I would be the only poster), I was more pointing out that I get the impression more people seriously use Ruby here, then Cobra.

With that in mind, should we have a Cobra section?
Fri, 16 Feb 2007, 19:14

I'm going to learn Cobra over the holidays... and then again, even the Blitz sections don't get too much use nowadays here. Most people here are experienced programmers who have been around for a while - and don't necessarily need programming help too often. I think it's nice like this though.

I'm going to try and make an effort to get Cobra sorted, and start writing WWs with it.

Mind you, the Cobra section is covered well by the SqueakyDuck website.

Whilst waiting for WinXP to reinstall on "PC1" I played about with some Vista features.
Nice handy new program called "Snipping Tool"
I instantly found it really great, and setup a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-Shift-F11) to load it. (F11 since that's the button Paintshop Pro uses for screengrabs)

Load it, it overlays the screen with a transparent-white color, Drag a clear box, Screengrab! And then it lets you save it as png, gif, jpg or mht (single HTML file), and you can even scrawl all over it and highlight things, too.

Fabbo!

Now I'm waiting for WinXP to Share it's big-ass D Drive, which contains all my coding, server files and other things. "Setting Folder Permissions"
Usually takes about an hour!

Once that's done, I'll get my home server up and running again, so my avatar should re-appear soon after I've done that.

ICS wasn't a problem. I let XP do it's stuff with the Wizard. It bridged the two networked PC's, set up the Internet Connection Sharing, and everything worked straight away.
Amazing!

Half three in the morning.

...

More coffee, methinks.

The dialog says that it has one and a half hours remaining, so I'm going to give up and go to bed.

I really shouldn't have formatted PC1..
I need to reorganise 2 PC's simultanously, now!

DD,

thank you for reading and for responding
to my post. true.

true, more people use Ruby than Cobra.
And you know, even if there was or wasn't
a Cobra section here...I will submit and enter
demos, logos, banners and even a game or two
made in Cobra.
Yes and true, I have Cobra too. And I can't
wait for the Cobra 3d. I'll still use Blitz3d
for some 3d graphics and animations.
But I'll also use the up n coming Cobra 3d too.

yet, I think Ruby and Cobra can coexist. The Cobra
guards the sacred Ruby. While the sacred Ruby
powers the Cobra as well.
Watch out Indiana Jones!

cheers,
