I watched that astronaut go up today, I can see why America would rather watch I love Lucy than the second moon landing. Other than the 8000mph thing it was a bit dull.

@rockford - a lot of the science and tech from the space programs have helped here on Earth. Also at the end of the day, for Humans to survive in the long run we need to get off this rock some time in the future.

@rockford - a lot of the science and tech from the space programs have helped here on Earth. Many of the experiments created for the space programme could/would have still been developed anyway. I'm not convinced that any of it is particularly worthwhile when there is still poverty, famine, war, pollution, long-term energy problems and other issues here on earth yet they spend billions of dollars off-world. As for the future of mankind - we're all fecking doomed. We can't even get on with our neighbours - how are they possibly going to send hundreds/thousands of people thousands of miles to make some rock habitable? At what cost? There are too many technological issues to make it viable at this point in time. I suspect it's not going to get any more possible any time soon too. |

Many of the experiments created for the space programme could/would have still been developed anyway. Maybe... maybe not. There are many examples of past scientists being stopped in their experiments and it has taken hundreds of years to redo/expand on those tech. (Go watch Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey)

Do you believe everything that the governments and government funded companies say?   Other than long-term (lack of) gravitational effects on organisms, there are virtually no experiments that can't be carried out here on earth for a fraction of the cost of doing the same experiments in space. If anything takes a hundred+ years to get back to it probably wasn't worth doing anyway, unless they were waiting for tech to catch up to do what they were trying to achieve in the first place. People/scientists generally stop in their experiments because of - 1) Failure (especially repeated) 2) Lack of funds and/or subject matter 3) Cost outweighs benefits 4) Lack of ability 5) Lack of understanding 6) Understanding improves (experiment then deemed pointless) 7) Something more relevant/demanding/important is taken on instead

How can anyone get pissed off with Clangers? They're too cute and fluffy! BTW Do Clangers eat moon cheese? I don't remember as I've not seen it in years. Didn't they used to eat soup made by the soup dragon? Or is that from a different programme altogether? |
