Stealth	While I disagree with these riots, it does bring to light the growing resentment toward law enforcement. My personal opinion is that law enforcement in the last 10 years has really overstepped their bounds. Wiretapping in the US is now common practice. Officers arrest people who create audio or video recordings of their misconduct. It's been ruled entirely legal for the government to place a GPS tracking device on your car without your knowledge. Officers are growing increasingly arrogant and power hungry. It's common practice for them to manipulate you out of your rights by lying to you. They often fabricate probable cause to enter your home without a search warrant. Officers are often racist and unfair on minorities. The worst offense is that they have been quick to kill those who they feel are even slightly a threat. It's disgusting. I'm glad citizens are fighting back. The government has gone too far. (It's my understanding that this guy who was killed was shooting at police. I wont defend him if that is true.) -=-=- Quit posting and try Google.

shroom_monk	This has bugger all to do with law enforcement. The peaceful protests this started with were because police shot a man who was shooting at them. The local gangs used this as cover to start looting, and the police did nothing - after they're used force at previous riots, they've been sued and complained about, so now they're just standing back. This isn't a protest, this isn't an uprising - this is just a wave of mindless violence simply for personal gain. I suspect DD is alright - as far as I've heard, the Birmingham riots are confined to the city centre, and there's not a lot of housing around there. -=-=- A mushroom a day keeps the doctor away... HoboBen	It's tempting to think of it as mindless, but the London riots began because of some very clear material causes. You have areas of poverty, massive unemployment (particularly youth unemployment), rising food prices, rising tuition fees and cuts to EMA denying access to education, youth centres closing due to cuts (only last week I think, amid severe warnings that it would lead to unrest) and continual police agitation through stop & search measures (Black people are 26 times more likely than whites to face stop and search). What actually happened with Mark Duggan is still uncertain, with the implication that he never fired, but a police officer believing (rightly or wrongly) that he was in danger and locals believing (rightly or wrongly) that the killing was wrong. With over 300 deaths in police custody since 1998 and not a single conviction of any police officer for any of them, people don't have much faith in the IPCC. Of course after the initial riot started you had the opportunists that don't even live there bussing in for entertainment (you even have reports of locals forming mobs to chase away the hooligans). While you can acknowledge the causes, rioting is not the answer, because it only hurts the community living there. I won't condemn the initial rioters, because the material situation should never have been allowed to develop to the point where it was necessary. But the solution is to organise, so that they have legitimacy and also the strength to actually change their situation. Rioting will not change anything; these communities are loosing twice. waroffice	I have heard reports of these moronic youths and now it seems a growing number of older people in cars looting because of the chaos in the streets. As there is no large group of rioters to police its difficult with cuts in police numbers. One thing I read that made me lose faith in the human race was the looting of an Oxfam charity shop, do these people have a clue what they are doing?

HoboBen	Update is David Cameron approving the use of plastic bullets for "as long as they are needed" despite warnings against it by one of the only officers to have deployed plastic bullets. This is a disturbing break away from mainland Britain's tradition of "policing by consent". Calling these rioters mindless is dangerous; heavy handed suppression is never going to fix the underlying issues. This can still be handled by traditional policing methods (we've had riots before), and an immediate program of reversing the closures of youth centres, reintroduction of EMA and an end to arbitrary stop and search. spinal	The way I see it, the "underlying issues" have more to do with lack of discipline than of social unrest. I've been watching the news on and off and from what I can see, it's mostly young people looting for the sake of it. They are using anger against the government as an excuse to be idiots. shroom_monk	I agree with Spinal - it is just looting for the sake of it, with some of the kids using Government cuts and so forth as a poor excuse. Rioters killed two men last night who were trying to protect a shop. They drove at them and ran them down, so they could carry on looting. The situation changes when these people are committing burglary and arson. Peoples lives are in danger and they should be considered dangerous criminals. They are lucky they aren't in the United States or they would be getting gassed, tasered, and thrown to the ground.
