The numbers are
A) How many little cubes I can get onscreen without too much slowdown.
B) How much of that cube-ness I can remove and replace.

See, In order to build up that many cubes onscreen, you need to add a whole big bunch of cubes into a single mesh.
For whatever inexplicable reason, current 3D methods seem to see "1 object with a million polygons, all over the place" as much easier to render than "1 million seperate polygons"
Go figure..
Sounds the same to me!

If I build.. um... let's say .. for example.. A JNKPlat level out of cube meshes, I'll need to be able to quickly remove and redraw them if and when the level changes.
So, I'm just checking to see how quickly I can manage that, as well as testing to see how complex I can make the level, and it's inhabitants.

I think we're looking for, roughly, 250 quick-change, and about 2500 complexity..

The first probably does far less calls to the hardware, which means far less context switches. That's why it's far faster.

@CodersRule: If your right click on 'My Computer' on your desktop and go to 'Properties' on the next screen it will say at the bottom the CPU and RAM stats of your machine.

For GFX card infoz click on the 'Hardware' tab and then 'Device Manager'. In the next 'Device Manager' window expand the 'Display Adaptors' tree and it will list all the gfx cardz on your system.

For me I have a 900mhz Intel Celeron M with a Mobile Intel 915G inbuilt GFX chipset.

550:32 on an Intel Single-Core Celeron @ 1.8GHz* with Intel GMA4500** integrated graphics. 2GB 800MHz DDR RAM. Windows 7. I have to say that I'm ... a little surprised that it's slower than the Eee. I can only lol at my integrated graphics.

And cry.

* I'm replacing this in a few months. I couldn't afford another CPU when I built this computer, but I couldn't keep using my old one -- ultimately, stability > speed.
** I was kind of ambivalent about replacing this until today. I don't ever play 3D games, for more or less the same reason that I am a terrible, terrible driver.

I don't think the Celeron's too bad.. Just an el-cheapo nVidia would boost your system no end.
I'm always amazed at how well my Celeron's still coping with quite a lot of things.
Heck, it plays Half Life 2!!

You'll probably get a half decent card for about £15-20. Try Aria.co.uk
