spinal	Can any of you guys help? -Situation- Comp #1 = Desktop Windows 7 Comp #2 = Laptop Windows 7 Comp #3 = Laptop Windows Vista #1 has a folder shared to 'everyone' #2 has a folder shared to 'share' #3 can access #2 shared folder #1 can access #3 shared folder #3 can not access #1 shared folder When connecting to #2 from #3 you are asked for login details (name/pw), but when trying to connect to #1 all you get is an error - \\UNKNOWN is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. UNKNOWN is #1's name of course. Stealth	Windows networking is a fucking nightmare. Make sure you're all in the same user-groups. Vista is going to have a harder time accessing Windows 7. They really screwed things up in Vista. -=-=- Quit posting and try Google.

Jayenkai	Here's how my setup is.. 1. Vista : Core middley system. It has the shared folders setup on a nice little "R:" drive. It also backs them up to it's secondary harddrive. (Microsoft's SyncToy) 2. Win7 : Connects to R, easy as pie.. except for the inexplicable 10 second delay for the first time that every single program that wants to access it!.. and then again every time you've reset the PC. Annoying. Instead, I do a single Additional Backup of sync'd folders to C:\ drive, use that, then resync once it's all done. (Microsoft's SyncToy) 3. Linux : Same as #2, connecting to R, except Linux can do it without the stupid delay. Doesn't bother backing up, haven't found a tool yet. Doesn't matter though, since there's no annoying delay. Linux beats Win7 4. Mac : Same as #3, no backup, but no delay either.. For reference, #1 is upstairs, #2/#3 are the same PC downstairs, and #4 is also downstairs. When doing Mac work I draw it on #2, save it to #1's hard drive, flip over to Mac, and pick it up from #1! Multi-System-Super-Coding!!! At no stage have I even bothered to attempt to setup any extra shares. It's just the one. Once that was working, I just left it as it was. Once you've got local backups, and easily accessible drives, you'll forget about trying to get things from one system to another.. Just keep reusing one single drive, and make sure it can access it for backups.. -=-=- ''Load, Next List!''

spinal	We even tried switching the firewall off, still the vista machine could not connect to the windows7 desktop, but could still connect to the windws7 laptop. -=-=- Check out my excellent homepage!

mindstorm8191	If this is a single file transfer job, I'd say just email the files to yourself. Yahoo email allows up to 10MB emails at a time, last I heard (a few years ago), that could have been increased by now. Or, transfer the files to your middle PC. spinal	The idea was to stream media from the desktop to whichever laptop was free at the time. That's on hold for a little while now I guess. Helen wants to format the vista laptop anyway, maybe that'll fix it. -=-=- Check out my excellent homepage!

waroffice	I would say check for firewall software (no point if using a normal router setup) some firewall softway like to block everything and ask later. The port i think you mean is 138 and 139 from the good old netbios days. Check each machine has the same protocols listed too. With it saying \\UNKNOWN is not accessible it sounds like DNS is being daft, try its ip address instead, click start then run and type it there, \\192.168.1.32 for example. I use a NAS drive, specifically an intel atom board running Freenas Set it up with a drive and it runs SAMBA/Windows shares or NFS shames, runs on freeBSD and is only 40Mb or summat. Can use rsync for backup that works on mac/linux

Scherererer	It sounds like a permissions issue to me. If you have advanced sharing enabled, you can see if the networking permissions are set for everyone, then you can also right click on the root folder and set the permissions there.
